2010 NFC North Discussion Thread

It wasn’t classless, it is actually the best thing for Harris and Harris knows it. Harris’ opportunities at Green Bay are limited due to the emergence of Tramon Williams and this will allow him ot catch on somewhere else.

As usual, DtC makes an idiotic statement.

I don’t expect harris to tell the truth about McCarthy because he wants another job in the NFL, but McCarthy is the same guy who threw away Brett Favre and had an old man fired from his job as a groundskeeper because he told McCarthy, “Don’t lay an egg” before a game last year. Mike McCarthy is the Eric Cartman of the NFL.

I think that’s a bit of a stretch. I’m sure Harris would have preferred and it would have been better for his career had the Packers brought him back into the fold and he won back the starting job or at least proved he was healthy. That he was unable to do so tells the story, there’s not much chance that another team will claim him and while he might get a few workouts it’d be a surprise if he latched on anywhere. He gets paid regardless, but being cut by a team with tons of inexperience and a lack of depth in the secondary is never a good thing.

Seriously? Al Harris will be picked up this week, guaranteed.

We shall see.

We’ll take him. We need corners.

Wouldn’t surprise me.

I suspect you may be overestimating the appeal of a 35-year-old cornerback coming off an ACL/LCL/FCL tear and chronic ankle injury. Ty Law is the same age, was better than Harris, and unemployed, and he’s healthy.

I admit to not knowing the NFL rules and guaranteed money. If the Packers cut him, do they still have to pay his contract? I thought they wouldn’t have to (except for the signing/other bonuses he got when he resigned).

Best move McCarthy ever made.

Favre had a better year last year than Rodgers did.

I think they do because he’s a vested veteran. Harris is essentially in the same boat as Moss was. If the Packers release him and he goes unclaimed the Packers are on the hook for his 2010 salary even if he resigns with another team. If he’s claimed by Wednesday, which he absolutely will not be, the new team would assume his contract.

Since the CBA has expired, I don’t think anyone gets to be a vested veteran this season. However, because he’s not on the active roster due to injury he gets paid anyway.

Slightly, and he is having a worse season this year and he is a pain in the ass and the Packers are 6-3 and we have a QB for 10-15 years. But you can keep trying to convince yourself that McCarthy letting Favre go was a bad decision.

We’ll see who hoists the Lombardi Trophy this year.

If they’re paying him regardless, then, wouldn’t the “classless” move to put him on IR so he wouldn’t have the chance to find a spot on another roster?

I do doubt he’ll get picked up off waivers because I don’t think any team will want to cover his $2 million salary. But signing him for close to the vet minimum if he clears and see what he has left makes a lot more sense.

Like I said, Randy Moss was reported to be treated that way and when the Bears signed Todd Collins it was reported that the Bears were on the hook for his full salary if the cut him when Hanie was healthy because of his vested veteran status.

No idea what rule to cite, but based on those two situations it seems clear that Harris would be due his full salary.

Here’s a PFT article explaining it as it applies to 2010.

Unfortunately, I don’t see the Vikings giving Favre the chance to do his part to cost them a huge playoff game with 3 turnovers this year. But it was sure fun to watch last year.

And if the Packers and Rodgers do better this year, will that change your mind? Because looking at your history, I’ll go out on a limb and say no.

The Collins thing is definitely wrong if they signed him after the start of the season - even vested veterans only get 25% if they weren’t on the opening day roster.

ETA: …which your cite actually points out too.

5 to 1 says it’s not the Vikings or the Packers- but there’s no question the Packers are better.

Hamlet, why do we even bother?
