2010 Olympics Closing Ceremonies

:smack: It’s been entirely too long since I’ve seen SCTV.

Looks like they’re doing the rest as as the “Olympic Party”.

Well, bedeebedeeb that’s all, folks. This sure was fun - we’ll have to have you all over again some day.

I’m probably gonna rewatch it on CTV’s site when they put it up. Pretty funny and well done. The Russian Anthem is something i liked too, but that’s only from the short version Nikolai Volkoff sang before the wrestling matches of the old WWF lol. The way they sung it was so militaristic though. Is that the only way to sing it?

Her sister Mary-Margaret is a genius singer-songwriter.

I think so.

only anthems I know are the Korean one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj7Gw2Sy0-k&feature=related, which is nice,

American one which is nice too, and O Canada which is nice. Russian one is very melodic but seems too militaristic. I like it though. It’s nice.

I’ve always liked the sound of the Russian national anthem. It seems stirring and encouraging.

I really liked a lot of tonight’s ceremony, but then again, I’m completely non-judgmental and sentimental about the Olympics. I’m all like “cheesy schmaltz for the host country? Bring it on.”

And Neil Young was a nice surprise.

Best. Anthem. Ever.

Almost makes me want to move to Russia. Well, okay, not really. But still completely kickass.

I think Canada’s is the best. Russia’s is too militaristic-sounding (though I like it), and ours is too bombastic.

The second best part of the close:

The Mime / Torch bit.

The best part of the close :

Russia. My God. That was just the ““preview”” one can only imagine what they will do if we survive 2012 [Solstice, not London.]

In fact, for nearly everything after that part, after it completed, I looked to my Mom and I said :

Did I tell you that I liked the Russia part?

The entire Shatner et. al. part was Bull Shat. It seemed out of place, and slow, because it was.

I guess that SCTV commedienne was funny.

At some point in her life.

And still no Rush, huh?

:p:p:p

Music was great and I’m not in this generation, or even the one before. Even the dreaded Alanis Morrisette sang a good one, although it killed the energy.

Is “Long May You Run” the only song Neil Young does these days? I should think “Heart of Gold” would have been more appropriate. :stuck_out_tongue:

Giant! Inflatable! BEAVERS![/quuote]

Available at your local “adult novelty” store?

But they’ve been telling us they’re OK for years, in song!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously! That’s just what I came in to say!

Same here!

I thought the whole ‘marching with the hammer and sickle’ graphic in the Russia montage was a little disturbing. The whole thing gave off a vague Soviet Propaganda vibe.

I thought Shatner and O’Hara were pretty lame, actually. The jokes were just bad. You’d think with the amount of money they spent on this whole thing they would have coughed up for some primo joke material. That stuff felt like it had been written down on napkins an hour or two before the show.

And if you’re going to do the whole Canada/Stereotype/self-deprecating thing, where were the McKenzie Brothers?

I did like the Hinterland Who’s Who theme with the geese before Shatner came out.

I was surprised that I liked the Nickelback song. Should I just kill myself?

And my wife thought Alanis Morissette was lip-syncing. She said her throat wasn’t moving the way it should if she was really singing. I’m agnostic on the issue.

And no Rush… You know what they should have done? They should have had Bob and Doug come out and say a few funny things, then had Rush appear and they could have sung “Take Off”. That would have been epic.

Take off, to the Great White North,
Take off, it’s a beauty way to go…

Nickelback cleaned up the lyrics a lot for that performance. I kinda like them, but I’m aware that I don’t always have highbrow tastes and I try not to admit it in public. The song is “Burn it to the Ground” off their album “Dark Horse”, if you were wondering (I don’t remember if they showed the info during the broadcast or not)

Alanis’s song was from the soundtrack to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and it sounded very close to the recording. I thought maybe she had laid down a new vocal track to the original music and was lip syncing to that. I get the winter theme, but she should have picked something a little livelier.

I’m fairly sure Michael Buble was lip syncing in spots too. I still enjoyed most of the show, Neil Young excepted, and even he was much more tolerable than John Furlong’s butchered attempts at French.

I don’t speak French, but I think I might have done a better job! :stuck_out_tongue:
