I definitely plan to see these movies in theaters:
Iron Man 2 - The trailer’s not as impressive as the original, but it still looks great.
The A-Team - They’re in a tank in a plane. The plane gets shot down by a jet. They use the tank to shoot down the jet as they parachute to earth. Oh holy fuck yes!
Predators - Nothing tops Ahh-nuld and Jesse Ventura, but this looks fantastic. And I trust Robert Rodriguez.
The Expendables - Sly, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Ahh-nuld, Dolph Lundgren and Stone Cold Steve Austin. The world is not ready for such cinematic awesomeness.
Machete - Wait, I was wrong. The world isn’t ready for this. But I am. I’d machinegun a Girl Scout troupe to see this movie!
Scott Pilgrim for sure, even though I think Michael Cera was pretty badly miscast.*
Other than that: Iron Man 2, Despicable Me, Inception, Toy Story 3, maybe Dinner for Schmucks, maybe The Switch. Probably whatever else garners surprisingly positive buzz as well.
*In the books, the hallmark of Scott’s immaturity (and his character) is how delightfully, randomly outraged he gets at the mundanities of life…he’s not some low-key, passive aggressive Paulie Bleeker. Unlike a lot of people, I like Michael Cera’s thing, but I can’t see him doing random outrage particularly well. Still, Edgar Wright is a genius, and Bryan O’Malley was extensively involved in the making of the film, so I have high hopes that it will approach the sublime brilliance of the comic even despite its lead. And I heartily encourage anyone who might enjoy comics, humor, well-constructed narratives, or awesome things to read the Scott Pilgrim books: it’s basically Toronto slacker manga with rock bands and ninjas, constructed loosely around the conceit that life is a video game. Sooo fantastic.
Top of the list is definitely Inception, Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to The Dark Knight. Trailers 1 and 2
Toy Story 3 is also probably the only other real certainty, but I suspect I’ll end up seeing around 1/4 of them, mostly because I work in the industry and usually can catch all the major tentpole flicks for free. Trailers that I enjoyed, casts that I’m enthusiastic about, or concepts that pique my morbid curiosity include: Predators, Knight and Day, The Kids are Alright, Micmacs, The Other Guys, Salt, The A-Team, Machete, MacGruber.
Ones I will absolutely positively not see: The Shrek, Twilight, and S&tC sequels. And I won’t see any of the films listed in the OP in 3-D.
I probably won’t see anything in theatres (not that all of them would come round here anyway), but here are the ones I’ll probably end up with on DVD eventually:
Iron Man 2
Robin Hood
Micmacs
Splice
The A-Team
The Last Airbender
Twelve
The Kids are Alright
Inception
Ramona and Beezus
Beastly
Step-Up 3-D
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
The Expendables
Takers
Piranha 3-D
I don’t go to the cinemas anymore, except on very rare occasions. I only went three times last year. The only one I will probably see this year is Toy Story 3
But here are those I will likely get on DVD, depending on eventual public popularity.
Iron Man 2
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
The A-Team
Toy Story 3
Knight and Day
The Last Airbender
Predators
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Predictably, mostly all epic visual effects films.
The Jonah Hextrailer looks really bad. Really really bad. Like Wild Wild West bad.
(And I keep forgetting: is Jonah Hex a Josey Wales ripoff, or is Josey Wales a Jonah Hex ripoff? IIRC, the two characters entered the culture at about the same time, with about the same backstory.)
My list would include Prince of Persia. I’ve never watched the original Toy Story and it sequel, so I be passing on Toy Story 3. Other than that, I have not caught trailers for the others on list, so I’m not sure.
If past performance predicts future results, none. I have been to the theater a whopping two times since 2008. I haven’t even heard of most of these. Based entirely on the titles, though, Piranha 3-D sounds awesome. I’m pretty sure 3-D piranhas are exactly what I need in my life.
There’s going to be a Marmaduke movie? You’re shitting me.
So, what will I be seeing this summer? Definitely Iron Man 2. Possibly Robin Hood. Toy Story 3, most definitely. Possibly Jonah Hex. Definitely both Inception and The Expendables. Possibly Centurion.
ETA: I’m also gonna go out on a limb and say that Robin Hood will be the summer’s first big bomb. Don’t get me wrong. Russell Crowe is my absolute favorite actor working today, and Ridley Scott’s a hell of a director. It’s just that the trailers make this project look very been there, done that.
