Will you give your case a rest, Hentor, if we all admit that we can’t live up to your tough minded individualism?
I for one react badly to Dio because he’s the only poster on the SDMB who ever expresses contrary opinions to anything I believe, and I’m a silly wanker who can’t bear that sort of affront to my correctness.
yes, thanks little one. Now everyone can see the context of the comment. People within the subculture of metal in the 80s despised what they regarded as synth pop. This is a surprise to you, or is somehow offensive?
I remember an argument with a friend who was into metal about my liking Billy Joel, who he dismissed because of the keyboard issue. Yikes! Who knew I failed to take sufficient umbrage?
This is ridiculous. Effective immediately, the hijack about keyboards, Diogenes the Cynic’s personality, and anything else related to either is off limits.
Alice Cooper
LL Cool J
Chic
Darlene Love
Neil Diamond
(Actually, I’m kind of tempted to vote for both LL Cool J and the Beasties and both Chic and Donna Summer but decided to limit myself to one rap and one disco act.)
Who I suspect will get in:
Alice Cooper (Seems like a non-brainer to me. Of course I thought that about the Stooges when they were first nominated in 2009 and they had to wait another year.)
LL Cool J (Suspect the Hall will want to induct a rap act, and they’ll go with the black one over the white one. The Beastie Boys will probably make it in 2013, since in 2012 I’m betting they’ll get passed over in favor of Public Enemy.)
Chic (Suspect the Hall will want a dance/disco act and Chic has better critics cred than Donna Summer. Although I won’t be completely surprised if they go with Summer and instead induct Chic’s Nile Rogers & Bernard Edwards in the ‘non-performers’ category as a recognition of their production work.)
Joe Tex (Beneficiary of the same pressure to include more R&B/soul acts that got Bobby Womack in during 2009)
J. Geils Band (They’re a fav of critic Dave Marsh who, along with Jann Wenner and former HOF Foundation director Suzan Evans, is one of the big three controlling nominations.)
Back to the question of who will get in, vs. who should get in, do not underestimate the importance of being alive and willing to show up at the ceremonies to add to one’s chances. Regardless of your feelings about the individual artists’ merit, it cannot be denied that Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Neil Diamond, J. Geils, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Donna Summer would put on a hell of a show. Bernard Edwards is dead, but Nile Rodgers still tours with Chic, and they would play the shit out of “Good Times” and probably make it the anthem for the evening.
Chuck Willis, Laura Nyro, and Joe Tex are dead. Donovan, Dr. John, Darlene Love, and Tom Waits are less flashy than the other nominees and would provide needed balance.
I also think it would be very interesting to discuss who would induct each of these nominees upon election. They often find an artist who has been heavily influenced by the inductee, and/or someone considered a “latter-day” version of the inductee. Like members of Duran Duran for Chic.
Of the nominees listed, I think Chic stands out as one of the bands that definitely should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, if not this year then at least at some point. Besides the production skills of Rodgers and Edwards, they were both excellent at songwriting and their respective instruments. Bernard Edwards might have been the best disco bassist of all time.
If Tom Waits gets in, I love love to see Elvis Costello induct him. Years ago, there was a Roy Orbison television special called Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night. It had an all-star band which included Waits on organ and Costello on guitar. Waits was so drunk he couldn’t function, and Costello helped him away from the organ and took over playing it. So, I’d love to see it, but it probably won’t happen.
Last month the nominees were posted for 2011 induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nominees include Alice Cooper, Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Chic, Neil Diamond, Donovan, Dr. John, J. Geils Band, LL Cool J, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, Tom Waits & Chuck Willis. How do you feel about this list and do you think there should be artists added/deleted from it.
There was a thread about this a couple of months ago. It’s ridiculous that KISS isn’t in the hall of fame, but they’re deciding whether the J. Geils Band should be.
