2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees

I don’t understand how they could overlook KISS for all these years, they’ve been eligible for like 10 years!

No moaning about Rush being continuously overlooked yet?

To quote Alex Lifeson, “I couldn’t care less, look who’s up for induction, it’s a joke”. The R&RHOF is a complete travesty that deserves absolutely no credibility at all. That some of the voters return blank ballots says that the nomination process is a pile of horseshit and should be completely redesigned. The committee has its view of who they want in the hall, and their voters have to take it or leave it. How about maybe letting the voters submit nominations first?

Weak class.

Kiss could be nominated? Really? I thought it was limited to musicians.

Laura Nyro? Really?

They’re pretty good musicians.

Yes, Laura Nyro. As they say in Parliament “I refer the learned gentleman to my previous remarks”.

I’d like Todd Rundgren to induct Laura Nyro should she win. He wrote a song about her on his first solo record and produced one of her last albums.

Along with KISS and Rush, I think it’s a joke that Deep Purple isn’t in yet.

If she is inducted, he’d be a good choice but I’m guessing that TPTB running the Rock and Roll HOF will probably try to get somebody younger who can claim her as an influence (e.g., Alicia Keys or Fiona Apple).

Anyway, I don’t really care that much about who gets selected and who doesn’t into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That being said, I think Rush is long overdue (and I’m not even a fan of the group).

Beat me to it. Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and New York Tendaberry
are amongst the best US albums of the 60s. On Allmusic all four of her first four albums rate 4 stars or better. As a comparison only one album by the Doors in that period rated as highly and only 2 ever by Bon Jovi.

KISS only managed a rating that high for their first 9 albums.

Both should have been in long ago.

Except for Frehley they are merely adequate. They could all be replaced with players from an average pub band. But that is not the point.

They ruled music for a chunk of the 70s and although I was never a fan of their music I think they typify rock 'n roll - they provided a lot of fans a lot of fun.

Welcome to the SDMB. As you can see, there was already a discussion of this topic; please go ahead and search for previous threads before you start a new one. I merged your thread into the existing one.

Again, welcome!

Gene Simmons himself has often said “I’m not a musician. A musician is a guy who goes to Juilliard and spends years studying theory. A musician is a guy who actually knows how to read music. I’m not a musician, I’m a performer.”

It’s the same idea Peter O’Toole expressed in “My favorite Year”- there’s a big difference between being a great actor and being a great movie star, and there’s a difference between being a great musician and being a great rock star.

Not for Jimi Hendrix.

True, though both are more likely to have been influenced by other performers who were directly influenced by Laura Nyro.

I was only kidding; the Sex Pistols are already in, after all.

There should be a hall for pop and novelty acts like Kiss, the Sex Pistols and Billy Joel. And then a rock only hall for the best of the best rock acts. No pop, rap, blues, soul, folk or anything else, just rock.

Here I went into a long impassioned defense of Tom Waits because I thought you called him a “non act,” but you said “non rock act,” which is true. He’s an influence on rock acts I guess… but really, the HOF is just a bullshit enterprise, and to that extent, not even really a “rock and roll” Hall of Fame so much as a Pop Music Hall of Fame. Eventually Simon Cowell will be in it, and the cast of Glee will be in it before long.

Rush and Kiss should be in it. It seems like everybody ends up in the R&R HOF. I bet they’ll eventually even have Bert Blyleven!

Maybe if he circles the voters, they’ll let him in.

Well you can only get in if you are a nominee. The people who do the nominations just keep nominating their picks until they are elected but don’t nominate acts they don’t like EVER. So some crap band Jann Wenner adores will be nominated year after year though no-one wants to choose them, while* Rush* can not be nominated while Wenner is alive because he doesn’t like them.

I never get into HOF or award list arguments. I figure if you don’t like their picks, go make your own.
