“Dancing Quarterbacks” – Band name!
Alright, almost midway through the season, and this thread is pathetic. In honour of the ageless Anthony Calvillo, who won a football game on Thursday to celebrate is 40th birthday, I’ve decided to bump this thread.
Who’s that at the top of the East? The Beast? Go Als go!
And who’s that at the bottom of the West? The…best (at losing multiple games in a row)?
Paul LaPolice has lost his job in the 'Peg, which makes my husband upset because he has an inordinate fondness for pointing and laughing at the hilarity of a man called Paul LaPolice, which I keep trying to tell him isn’t all that funny (and hubby isn’t one to talk, for funny last names, TBH!)
Apparently the Alouettes are interested in Vince Young, recently cut by the Buffalo Bills.
Well, where have you been all summer?!? No wonder your thread’s been languishing!
Off to Taylor Field in a few minutes for the Battle of the Cellar-Dwellers (a/k/a the Labour Day Classic )
Go Riders!
Sask 52, Winnipeg 0.
That’s all I need to say.
After watching the way Winnipeg was playing in that game, I think my high school team could have beaten them. It became apparent that it wasn’t a question of whether the Riders would win; rather, it was a question of by how much?
Guess we found out.
It was one of those games where you could see the rot spreading until at the end Winnipeg couldn’t do anything right. I think the turning point was the blocked punt that Brackenridge ran in for a touchdown. I think that just took the wind out of Winnipeg until by the end, there were those two fumbled punts that the Riders recovered. Five turnovers overall.
Apparently it’s the first time Winnipeg has been shut out since 1967.
Some disagreement whether it’s the highest Saskatchewan margin of victory over Winnipeg. Some media sources say it is, others say there was an even more lopsided game once.
Felt sorry for Winnipeg up to the point where they speared Durant with helmet to helmet contact - after that, I was hoping the Riders would ram the ball down the Bombers’ throats.
Somewhere, Paul Lapolice has a schadenfreude smile on his face.
And the Grey Cup Train kicks next Sunday, starting from Vancouver and crossing the country, ending in Toronto for Grey Cup.
Note that it’s stopping in Lethbridge on September 24th, Spoons!
You just have to love Labour Day for football.
Go Stamps!!!
Great! I didn’t think we’d be on the route, but it looks like we are. I’ll do my best to see it–thanks for the tip!
I’ve been busy…you can all contribute to the thread in my absence, you know!
I’ve got tickets for the 16th - game against the riders. Go Als!!! Should be fun!
Turned the tv on a bit after the hour; shots of Bombers playing the Riders, but wasn’t sure if it was replays from last week’s game or start of today’s game.
Asked Mrs Piper; she said it must be today’s game, because the Bombers had more than 0 points.
Two absolutely terrible losses for the Bombers in two completely different ways. I really don’t know which one was worse.
Labour Day I would guess - losing on a field goal with 0:00 on the clock is tough, but they were in the game all the way through.
Labour Day, absolutely nothing went right for them.
And I will just add to what I am sure is the chorus in the Peg - why did the Bombers try for a punt, not a field goal?!?
I’m liking this headline: Call LaPolice! Bombers robbed!
If he missed it they would have given Sask excellent field position. The punter was supposed to kick it out of bounds, pinning Sask deep in their own end. Kicking it through the end zone was a huge mistake, but you can’t blame the coach for that.
Sure, but you can’t compare them by saying what the down side for a missed field goal is compared to making the punt. YOu compare the down sides to each other, and the upsides to each other.
The down sides for both plays are about the same: whether he missed the field goal or kicked the punt into the end zone, Saskatchewan gets good field position.
But if he made the goal, the Riders need a touchdown to win, admittedly with better field position than the coffin corner kick, but a touchdown from 35 is harder to get than a field goal from 35.
And if you can’t blame the coach for the missed punt, neither can you blame him for a missed field goal.
I just don’t think it was as dumb a coaching call as some people are saying. There were valid reasons for choosing as he did. Either way, his players have to come through for him. I think he was expecting more from his defense too and they let him down.
Pin them deep and give the defense a chance to win the game for them wasn’t such a crazy plan.
In the Molson bar at Calgary Airport, watching to see if the Bombers can put it together against the Stamps. Half way through the first quarter, and the answer appears to be “no”, but we’ll see…
1st quarter stats: Winnipeg had 0 first downs and 3 net yards. Going to be a long game.
Ouch - Bombers long pass intercepted on the 5 yard marker.
27 - 0 at the half.
At this rate the Stamps might hammer them worse than the Riders did on Labour Day.
