Well, the refs never call holding against the offence guys when the Riders are playing defence, and they don’t understand Forward Pass Interference when it happens to be a Rider going for the ball, but other than that, pretty good.
Weston Dressler had one of his best games of the season: 160 receiving yards, two touchdowns (and a third called back on a holding call against the Riders), and moved into 5th place on Saskatchewan’s all-time list of receivers, displacing the legendary Joey Walters. More than once, as he caught yet another ball, untouched, Mrs Piper and I turned to each other and said, “How is he getting open so often? and why is BC letting him do it?” Don’t know the answer, but a nice question for Riders fans to be pondering.
the Riders held the Lions to 0 touchdowns (and only 7 points) for three quarters. The score was 0-0 after the 1st quarter; 18-1 Riders at the half; 19-7 Riders after the third quarter; and 27-21 final. The Lions staged an impressive comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns, but the Riders managed to run the clock out on them. (And an aside - Lulay for the Lions can certainly throw extremely long, extremely accurate passes! Very exciting to watch, even though he’s playing for the wrong team.)
And someone in the Taylor Field operations has a sense of humour in choosing the music. After the game, the signature piece is always “Paint the Whole World Green” by Jason Plumb and the Willing. Last night, as we were filing out, they played that one, and followed up with:
“In the Jungle, the mighty Jungle,
The Lion(s) sleep tonight.”
“Hush my child, don’t fear, my child,
The Lion(s) sleep tonight.”
:p:D:p:D:p:D:p:D:p
Riders are on the road for the next few weeks - next home game is against “the Birds” as the PiperCub calls them. Some team from Montreal.
But, some injuries on both sides of the ball. Sanders for the Riders may be out for the season with an ACL; Collins for the Riders and Bruce for the Lions had a ferocious collision and neither came back into the game; and Geroy Simon also didn’t come back after a hit. No word on whether any of them are seriously injured; hope not.
Have fun! The Piper Cub is actually excited about the Als game, which comes on before the Riders tilt with the Argos. He has a fondness for both the Birds and the BooBombers, so is glad to see both together.
I thought it was going to be tonight. Oops. I’m sure they’ll replay it.
I too enjoyed the quirkiness of a league with two Roughrider teams, and didn’t think much of the name Renegades. However branding issues aside I think part of the issue is that the guy who owned the Ottawa Roughriders when they went under still has the rights to the name and wanted $$$ to release the rights to the new team owners.
Will you be able to make the game today, or are you still a victim of E coli?
Took some immodium, made it out, though it was a stinker. The game, not…you know, me.
The Ottawa Rough Riders (NB the different spelling) name was bought by Jeff Hunt, the Ottawa 67s owner and the new CFL franchise owner. The CFL made the (IMHO) silly decision to give Saskatchewan veto rights over our name. They said “No,” and considering the Ottawa Sun ran a headline that read “Greedy Hicks say NO to Rough Riders,” I’m sure we aren’t ingratiating ourselves enough to change their mind anytime soon.
I hope they do somehow, though. It’s a great tradition, and I’d rather be reminded of the Russ Jackson years before my time, than the shitty Kerry Joseph years I saw with the Renegades.
And from a legal standpoint, what I learned so far about trademark in 1L and 2L IP, I feel like the only real impediment is the CFL’s blessing. No one, save a dottering mother ordering hockey sweaters from an Eaton’s catalogue, would confuse one team and its products from the other!
Brandon Whitaker, SJ Green, Brandon London, Victor Anderson.
Formidable players…all hurt.
Though the Als got the win against the Argos, keeping them in first place in the East. They join BC and Calgary as having clinched a playoff spot. It’s turning out to be a tough year - let’s hope the latest injuries (London and Anderson) aren’t too serious!
Shea Emry scored a touchdown on an interception - I like this player, so I’m happy about that!
And the Stamps narrowly win over the Ti-Cats in a “Snow Bowl.”
Northern Piper, any thoughts on next week’s Argos-Riders matchup? I’ve got a couple of friends who will be travelling to Regina for the game. (And this ex-Torontonian is wondering if they have an extra ticket…?)
So, the Riders lose, but end the day with a confirmed play-off spot because Andy Fantuz fumbled the snap for the Ti-Cats, making Luca Congi miss the field goal, meaning neither the Ti-Cats nor the Bombers can post a better record than the Riders. Now, it’s just a question of whether they play in the East or in the West - if the Riders win both their last games, they stay in the West, but if the Esks catch up to tie them in points, the Riders travel East.
Spoons, I really can’t predict it. They’ve been so hot and cold this season, and Ray is back for the Argos. Should be a good game, in any event.
I think they do every year. It’s become a photo op for the Calgary contingent whether or not the Stamps are in the big game. Er, I suppose not always the Royal York, though.
I think we’ll see the horse in the Royal York lobby. Though I also think that we’ll see a lot more organization to it that there was back in the 1940s: handlers, a floor prepared for the horse (the Royal York lobby has a beautiful carpet that I’m sure it doesn’t want to see ruined by horseshoes and/or other things horses have been known to do), plenty of media. Calgarians are happy, the Royal York gets some good publicity, the Toronto media has a field day. Win-win for all.
As for the game, Toronto and Calgary will be an interesting matchup, that’s for sure.
