The major categories will be announced this coming Sunday.

Bumping, since the major awards (acting, writing, directing, series) are on Sunday night.

I’ll be rooting for anything Downton Abbey (especially Brendan Coyle, so thrilled he was nominated!), but I think the major awards are going to Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Which they richly deserve.

I can’t believe Cranston didn’t win the lead actor in a drama Emmy, and I also can’t believe that Breaking Bad may conclude its whole run without winning an emmy for best drama, which would be ridiculous.

I’m thrilled for Damian Lewis, Claire Danes, and Homeland. But what’s it going to take for a Mad Men actor to win an Emmy? If Christina Hendricks couldn’t do it with her material this year, I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.

Also, I was a huge Modern Family fan for the first two seasons, but I thought this past season featured a noticeable drop in quality. Everything got bigger, broader, and more grating. I was disappointed to see that they won in pretty much every category they were nominated for. Sigh.

Why so many non-TV people in the memorial montage?

I still find it frustrating that the bad network shows keep running the comedy section. I wouldn’t mind so much if Community was nominated more, but it wasn’t. I laugh way harder at FX’s Louie, Sunny, and Wilfred than I do at Modern Family. It ridiculous how unfunny the nominees (New Girl?) are in comparison to Community and Sunny.

EDIT: At least Jon Cryer recognized that there were much more deserving people than he.

Best bit of the evening: Fallon and Colbert trying to stop Stewart from reaching the stage. Funny stuff. Ten in a row for his crew. I thought Homeland was riveting and deserved to win for all concerned. Glad to see Jesse get the supporting actor for BB and Maggie Smith for Downton.

But if he didn’t think he could win, why did he submit himself? Is that how it works? (I read somewhere that he submitted the episode where he had a heart attack.)

I was surprised at his win too. He’s brilliant at what he does best – the physical comedy – but the show gets no respect and his character is the definition of loser. How the guy manages to go to work every day is beyond me, considering how he’s written.

I’m thinking his win was a final industry smack at Charlie Sheen.

Breaking Bad will win best drama series next year.

Late to the game, but it’s a crime Lena Headey didn’t even get nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a drama. I wouldn’t necessarily expect her to win, but she is rapidly converting me to a fanboy. IMHO she did the best overall work in season 2 of Game of Thrones.

Each is listed with their TV credits.

I was happy to see Homeland win - but admit I lost interest in Breaking Bad in the first season, about episode 2 or 3; probably a mistake (given the great reviews and fan base since then), but have never watched it since.

Modern Family may have lost a bit of luster this past season, but it still remains one of the most consistently funny shows on the air. Compared to some of the other comedies currently running, and some new series that have recently aired, they still seem to have the best writers and cast working in TV comedy today.

I would have preferred BBC’s Sherlock to win than Hatfields and McCoys (which I watched, but it was somewhat tedious and could have used the grittiness of the series “Justified” to make it better).

So, all in all, I think the Emmy’s got it right. Jimmy Kimmel was OK…I didn’t laugh out loud, but he was entertaining enough and had a few good lines that were amusing.

As much as I love** Breaking Bad**, I’m glad that Homeland took home Best Drama. It deserved it this year, and Damian Lewis deserved his win, too.

Agree…but it was weird to hear him speak with a British accent - I had no idea he was British! Just very odd, considering the character he plays on the series…then again, he does have secrets there too, so maybe this is a clue?!

I just can’t believe that John Cryer ever won an Emmy.

IMO, his portrayal on 2. 5 Men is just the most annoying and creepy imaginable and I almost try to FF through every second he is talking on that show. He just brings down the entire show.

The only person I can imagine who is anywhere near as ridiculous and creepy and undeserving of an Emmy win is Eric Stonestreet from Modern Family. IMO, he does a terrrible disservice to gay men everywhere. His “over the top” portrayal of a gay man is so annoying and ridiculous that … Oh, just see what I have to say about John Cryer above.

Finally, I just want to say that if either of these creeps get any acting awards, I’m just happy they are Emmys because I’m thinking no one values or respects an Emmy.

Remember the episode from The Sopranos where someone tries to pawn an Emmy and is just laughed at? I think the pawnbroker said something like, “If it was an Oscar, then I could give you some serious money. But an emmy? There is the trash can over there.”

It is such a shame because all of the rest of the cast of Modern Family is just wonderful and the show may very well be currently the very best sitcom on all TV. But, the two actors, I spoke of above, they are just, just, just … oh shit! IMO, they are both just ridiculous.

I just can’t imagine who the Hell votes.

“More grating”. That is the perfect expression I wanted to use but couldn’t manage to remember it. I may disagree with you about the rest of the cast. But no one could ever be more grating than Eric Stonestreet - well - with the possible exception of John Cryer.

I like that show (2.5 Men) so much that when watching it, I find myself wishing that John Cryer would get struck by lightning or by a Mac Truck or a big bus or other kinds of things that would kill him. During the show, my fantasy wishes for his death grow more and more violent until the end of the show when I find myself wishing that someone would throw a bucket of acid over his head and that it would eat his face and leave him screaming in agony.

I’m sorry for putting any violent images into your minds. But that is just how much I just hate that terrible actor. AFAIC, he singlehandedly took that wonderful show and just ruined it with his simpy, grating, talentless performances.

Die! John Cryer. Die! Asshole Die!

I hate the character, but I think the blame is with the writers. That Cryer can play that part without irony is a testament to his skill. I keep looking for something in his eyes, to indicate that he recognizes what an awful character he’s playing, some sense of shame. Nope. He’s playing it straight. That’s Emmy-worthy, IMHO.

Thank you. IMO, that is an intelligent and worthy point of view.

IMO, you are one of the good ones!

Why didn’t they do the Variety Writers award during prime time this year? The nominees’ montage is always my favorite thing of the night!

I’m glad Homeland got some major love last night. Especially Claire Danes–she’s really great in that role.

I agree with the sentiment upthread that Lena Headey should have been nominated for GoT. She’s terrific in everything she does.
