Emmy Nominations 2013

The Emmy nominations have been released - you can download them from here.

My biggest shock: New Girl ended up with zero nominations, even in the Creative Arts categories.

No Tatiany Maslany for Best Actress in a Drama is disappointing

Yeah, New Girl definitely got robbed. Absolutely nothing for Hannibal either? Was it not eligible because of its late season debut? Glad to see Margo Martindale sneak into the “guest actress” (?!) category for her role as Claudia in The Americans.

I cannot believe Hannibal got nothing! Nothing! Not even the artistic categories, when it is by far the best designed show on television right now. Ugh, just t:mad:

Veep is a fantastic show and I’m glad to see it getting a lot of nomination love.

Are there any surprises though? Jason Bateman snuck into the lead comedy actor group, which is nice.

Is House of Cards really that good?

Oh yeah this too

It really is. I went in expecting to love Kevin Spacey but be bored by the show. Turns out the show is as great as he is. Very much recommended.

Happy to see Episodes got some good nominations - if you have On Demand and Showtime, you can see the first two seasons - give it a shot - VERY funny show! It will be returning for a third season.

I enjoyed the best commercial nominations - I didn’t know they had that category. They were for Grey Poupon, Google Chrome, Nike and Canon and are easy to find with a web search.

Disappointing, but not too surprising for me. It seems like sci-fi shows are often overlooked. But Orphan Black is coming back for another season, so maybe it’ll get more viewers and award recognition the next time around.

Ditto. IMO, New Girl became the best comedy on TV in the later half of Season 2, so for it not to have any nominations is highly disappointing.

An interesting topic came up at work today:

What does it mean when a show that has never been on television (House of Cards) will end up winning an award for the “best of television”.

What does this mean for the industry? What constitutes television? Where is the future?

Neat huh?

(Also I think the commercial thing IS new)

A lot of disappointing snubs but the fact is there are just SO many quality series on television right now (and Netflix, since that’s included as well). You could probably come up with a list of 15 people in each acting category that are just as deserving as each other, and any 6 you chose would be great.

No Jon Cryer? He won Lead last year didn’t he? (I’m not disappointed that he’s been left out.)

Really happy about the noms of Tony Hale and Anna Chlumsky (My Girl!) for Veep. They’re fantastic.

No Eric Stonestreet either, who won for supporting last year. I was very surprised (but not displeased) to see their names missing.

I thought Modern Family had a really down year, so I was hoping that New Girl’s fantastic second season would be able to build on their handful of season 1 nominations and even make a run for the Best Comedy prize. Guess not.

It seems that a lot of shows will have a great year, get a lot of nominations that year, then keep getting nominations year after year even if the show dips in quality or there’s other better competition. I think that’s what’s happened to Modern Family. It’s not a bad show, but it’s not as good as once was and there are better shows, but the voters keep voting for the same thing over and over.

I wish there was a rule for how many times a show could get nominated or won. It could help clear out the ones that just keep getting nominated by inertia, and let others that haven’t been nominated yet get some recognition. There are many great shows that have never been nominated or won awards, and it’s partially because the same shows get nominated over and over again.

This would suck a little for shows that do maintain high quality every year, like Breaking Bad. But maybe it’d be worth it overall.

I really hope this is Breaking Bad’s year to win Dramatic Series. Tellingly, serial winners Modern Family and Mad Men did not earn any writing nominations in their respective categories (MM didn’t get a directing nomination either). BB also has more total nominations than MM, too.

Odds & Ends

Elementary gets two nods for the title design and title theme
Justified gets zero nominations
Sam Elliott gets nominated for voiceover work on Robot Chicken
Stewart vs. Colbert nomination showdown: 7-6 Daily Show
I don’t watch SYTYCD anymore, but 4 of the 7 choreography nods (Sonya, Mandy, Travis, NappyTabs) go to it
Nathan Lane is up for Best Guest Actor in a drama and a comedy. (Honorable Mention: Bobby Cannavale is up for Supporting Actor in a drama and Guest Actor in a comedy)
Oscar-winners Steven Soderbergh, Danny Boyle and Jane Campion are all up for Best Directing.
Louis C.K. is up for 8 awards across 3 different shows (Louie, SNL and his HBO special)
Julia Louis-Drefyus gets her 14 nomination, a record for an actress in the comedy category (previously shared with Lucille Ball)
I think this is the first year that stunt work is now divided between Drama and Comedy/Variety series. This accounts for (according to IMDB) the first ever Emmy nod for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I hope Benedict Cumberbatch wins for his role in Parade’s End. He was fantastic. It’s too bad Rebecca Hall wasn’t nominated also–she was just as good.

I’d love to see Anna Gunn win for Breaking Bad. She really carried a lot of the dramatic load on the show this past year.

Sorry to see that *Fringe *didn’t get any love for its final season. It really deserved some kind of recognition.

Yeah, John Noble deserves the Emmy for his portrayal of Walter over the years.

Despite its flaws, Arrested Development deserves a Best Comedy Series nomination.

I’d vote for this. I love those titles.
