2012 NFL Pre-Draft Discussion

I’ve always taken it as a given that Manning would never move into his little brother’s division. Two matchups in eight years is a far cry from twice a year.

It’s not as simple as it seems, since the players pay taxes for the places they play the games, and not 100 percent based on where they reside (depending on the taxing state). Having half of your games would provide a tax advantage, of course, but the difference is not as great as could be assumed.
This is written from a baseball perspective, but it gives you a quick idea of what I am talking about:

On another note.
Was I whooosed. Or. Omni, did you really get a Packers share? How did that happen? Why did it happen? Crazy.

Wow, that is bizarre and downright silly. I wonder what would happen if an NFL team in say Texas were to write it’s contracts so that the players only got paid for practicing. They played for free. In that scenario they’d owe no tax to the road states and so long as the always practiced in Texas they’d have a competitive advantage. I imagine there’d be some NFL or tax laws that would need to be fought, but it’s worth a shot!

It happened because I’m a sucker and I simply had to be able to say I was a NFL owner. It’s simply a horrible twist of fate that the Packers are the only team to allow this insanely overpriced souvenir.

I can’t believe that no one has posted about this yet, but it looks like the numbers are in.

Glazer: Rams, Redskins strike deal for No. 2 pick

**Three **1st rounders and a 2nd rounder plus change. Time to call Flynn’s agent and start scouting Tannehill.

Ouch. That’s a pretty stiff price. If he turns out to be a great player, then I suppose no price is too high. If he turns out to be Jamarcus Russell…

Sorry SenorBeef. I know how much you wanted this guy.

Wow, that’s a lot to give up. Unreal.

If only the Vikes hadn’t beaten Washington in week 16. {sigh}

I really wanted RG3 but I’m glad the Browns didn’t out bid that. I think there’s an excellent chance that RG3 will be a difference making QB but with as many holes as this team has that number of picks could be crippling.

Sorry Senor.

I doubt that he will be that bad…but man, if RGIII turns out to be only a mediocre QB or worse, injury prone, the Foreskins are fucked for a long time. Think about how loaded the Rams roster is going to be going forward too. Damn.

Well, when you’re as bad as the Skins have been for as long as they’ve been, worst case scenario you’re in the same place you were before you made the trade, so I’m really not seeing all that much downside.

Plus, when the Skins were on the other side of this trade when the Saints gave them all of their picks for Ricky Williams, they pretty much blew all of those picks on mediocre-to-worthless players, so again, only time will tell. They got Jan Jansen who was a good tackle but he retired early due to injury. They drafted Champ Bailey but traded him to Denver after only 4 seasons. Everyone else either only lasted a few years as backups or never even made the team.

Sure, they’re out 2 1st rounders (not including this year’s 6th pick) and a 2nd, but they spent the last decade trading away high picks for basically nothing, so again, they’re in the same place they were before the trade, and this time they’re spending it on a worthwhile player, not someone else’s faded star.

I hope they get stuck with Luck.

Absolutely right. If they’re really down on McCoy, they can take Tannehill or someone else later on.

I feel bad for Griffin. He’s going to a bad team that’s just mortgaged their future, and will likely be changing coaches soon. Terrible situation.

Top players get drafted by bad teams. It’s just how it works. He’d be in the same situation in Cleveland. What’s the difference?

There are bad teams and there are bad franchises. Cleveland is somewhere on the margin between the two, but the Redskins are really a special kind of dysfunctional.

And they used to be run so well under the Cooke family. Dan Snyder is the worst owner in the NFL. And yes, that even includes my team’s owner Mike Brown.

Say what you want, but it’s already been one hell of an offseason and free agency hasn’t even opened yet.

In the flurry of Manning and RG3 news this little story seems to have been mostly overlooked. Colts moves result in $38 million of dead money. Wow, everyone is saying that RG3 is going to walk into a horrible situation due to the loss of those picks but Luck’s situation isn’t going to be much better with a team only able to spend about 67% of what the rest of the league can pony up, and a team that’s almost certainly going to be without 5 of their 6 best players from last year.

Maybe. But he certainly is fearless with the checkbook, which no one would ever accuse Mike Brown of.

I’m not a Snyder fan at all, but to his credit, the Danny has let Shanahan and Bruce Allen (GM) run the show their way; Vinny Cerrato was just a yes man with a blank checkbook, and clearly Snyder did not know what he was doing. It’s only been a couple of seasons so we’ll see if he’ll continue to keep his hands off, but for now he seems to be content to let his football guys run the football stuff and just sign the checks.

In other under-reported news from the last couple days, Mark Sanchez signed what looked like a somewhat baffling 5-year $58M contract from the Jets. On it’s face this seemed borderline insane when you consider the fact that Sanchez seemed more likely on his way out in NYC but this PFT article breaks down the details in a what that makes a lot more sense.

Still, if I were a Jets fan I’d probably have preferred that they not guarantee his 2013 contract but the immediate cap reduction probably balances out that investment. Makes me wonder if the Jets intend to draft Tannehill or one of the other 2nd tier QB prospects and groom him for 2 years under Sanchez. I suspect that answer is a resounding yes.

Continuing my Saturday afternoon PFT dump, this little conspiracy nugget is somewhat brilliant.

Chiefs go out of character in pursuit of Peyton Manning.

Here’s the juiciest nuggets.

I’d say that makes so much sense it almost has to be true, both from the Chiefs perspective and the Broncos. Manning to the Broncos would cure so many problems, but the Chiefs damn well want them to pay dearly for it. Granted I suspect the Dolphins will take care of that issue without the Chiefs help.

I suspect that Tebow sees this connection as well. I’m guessing there’s more here than pure specuation.
