2014-2015 Awards Season

The DGA just announced their nominees:

Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel
Clint Eastwood, American Sniper
Alejandro Inarritu, Birdman
Richard Linklater, Boyhood
Morten Tyldum, The Imitation Game

Now, it’s very rare that the Academy matches with the DGA perfectly (5-for-5). It last happened in 2009 & 2005, but in the last 10 years, 6 of them went 4-for-5 with matching (in 2006, it was 3-for-5, and in 2012, the truly bizarre 2-for-5).

So my guess would be that the two most vulnerable are Eastwood and Tyldum, and the director in the best position to replace one of them is Ana DuVernay (Selma)–though Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), David Fincher (Gone Girl), James Marsh (The Theory of Everything), Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher), and Mike Leigh (Mr. Turner) shouldn’t be ruled out.

Selma was a little bit of a surprise, but apparently a lot of DGA members had little opportunity to see the final form of the film:

Yes, SELMA has been MIA from virtually all the guilds (their Golden Globe showing has been their most substantial presence in the awards run). But screeners did go out to all the Academy members, so they’re hoping the name recognition and buzz will be enough to get the members to pop that DVD in. The rest is out of their control.

Thanks for the DGA nominations MovieMogul. I’m killing time waiting for Inherent Vice to start, so here’s another Guild.

Essentially, the Oscar is between Interstellar and Apes, and just like its predecessor Rise lost to the inferior Hugo, the deserving Dawn is likely to lose to its more high-minded competition.

I can’t find it online (huh, I wonder why…), but the SJ Merc had as a front page headline today:

“And the Oscar for Best Caucasian goes to…” and then a list of all the best actor/supporting actor and best actress/supporting actress nominees. Did I just say “actress”?

I actually thought it was kind of funny, but I guess it created a bit of a stir.

Bump for a big awards weekend.

Tomorrow is the Producers Guild awards–the winner of this the last 7 years went on to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Then Sunday, the Screen Actors Guild awards, which can usually be counted on to accurately predict at least 3 of the 4 individual acting categories as well.

We have a race! The Producers Guild went for Birdman. Their Documentary award went to the Roger Ebert doc Life Itself. The Animated went to The LEGO Movie. Neither of those were nominated for Oscaars.

Screen Actors Guild WINNERS:

Birdman: Ensemble

Julianne Moore - Actress (Still Alice)

Eddie Redmayne - Actor (The Theory of Everything)

Patricia Arquette - Supporting Actress (Boyhood)

J.K. Simmons - Supporting Actor (Whiplash)

I believe I need to re-think my Oscar predictions.

I am loving this surge for Birdman! I like when it’s an actual race for the top awards and not one picture dominating all the pre-Oscar awards. (Plus Birdman is my favorite of the nominees, though I have yet to see Boyhood.)

It’s interesting because the Oscars usually play it safe and the two front-runners are definitely not safe choices. BOYHOOD is a 12-year experiment with a movie that’s almost 3 hours long and essentially plotless (though that doesn’t mean it’s not rich in character and incident). BIRDMAN is an audacious technical experiment, translating the one-take conceit into a psychological motif that is gimmicky or gutsy (YMMV) but a genuine production marvel that also sings the praises of the misanthropic artist. Neither falls into any easy category of Awards Bait and both fall well outside the typical Oscar template. Which of the two will AMPAS choose? Or will they go with the safe fallback, THE IMITATION GAME (which, with acting, directing, writing, and editing nods, has all the standard prerequisite for a win while following a more traditional storyline)? The DGA is the last remaining significant precursor so that may either seal the deal (if Inarritu wins) or mix it up more (if Linklater takes it). Either way, it should be interesting, even if most of the acting awards are foregone conclusions.

Most recent Guild winners plus the Scripters.

Bumping because both the DGA and the BAFTAs are this weekend. While the former is an important precursor (none has been a more reliable predictor of its category in the last 70 years), the BAFTAs you have to take with a grain of salt because the memberships overlap a little but don’t necessarily represent momentum. Still, it’s always nice when awards get to spread the wealth a little.

Also, the Visual Effects Society awards came out. Again, not a great precursor (VFX professionals have very different standards than regular Academy membership) but still interesting:
