I saw a snarky comment about knowing FSU football players were not involved because the shootings happened in the library. Sorry that it happened, but that’s America these days. It’s a larger issue, best discussed outside the game room board.
Two of my cousin’s kids were at Virginia Tech when that tragedy occurred. One of them was in a neighboring building. I recall an anxious hour, or so, waiting for their safety to be confirmed by their dad.
We all feel for the FSU community. Hope that all the healing takes place and you get past this. There’s a lot more to a college town than football, sometimes we get so worked up over a game that we forget that.
This might be the worst week of the season for CFB. I just picked the games in Oak’s pick’m league and there is not game on the list that is MUST SEE for me. The SEC games of the week is Ole Miss vs Arkansas and Mizzou vs Tennessee. Both 2nd tier games IMO.
B1G Game of the week appears to be Wisky at Iowa. And it is supposed to be real foggy.
Baylor at Okie State? Maybe
Rivalry games in California. But no one East of the Rockies gives a damn.
Worst weekend of the year!
So you would think that with no big games, at least one of the major networks would show Oregon or Alabama. But both games are on regional networks this week.
Looks like the Hoke era at Michigan has but one game left. Of course, OSU had all they wanted from Indiana today so you never know if U-M could pull the shocker next week.
Also, Samaje Perine of Oklahoma helped Mariota in the Heisman race by shattering Gordon’s single-game rushing record just a week after he set it. And Perine is a true freshman, which proves it ain’t that hard
Amazing sequence in the Cal - Stanford game today.
Late in the 3rd quarter, Stanford up 24-7 but the Bears are driving. 1st down on the Stanford 15 yard line. The Cal QB on a keeper takes it into the end zone. Refs signal TD. But hold on…review (1). After further review, the QB knee touched on the one – 1st & goal Cal. Next play, QB keeper into the end zone. Refs signal TD. But hold on… review (2). After review, the QB’s knee touched before he broke the plane. And oh yeah, there was a personal foul on Cal after the play. 2nd & goal from the 16.
Pass into the end zone. Cal receiver comes down with it. Ref signals TD. But hold on…review (3). After review, the receiver did not maintain control. (I haven’t seen the video, but apparently this call was egregiously horrible).
As you can imagine, the fans are foaming at the mouth by now.
The Bears wind up kicking a field goal.
On the ensuing kickoff the Bears try an onside kick, and recover. But hold on…Stanford throws the flag and calls for a review (4).
Thank God, the call is upheld, or otherwise there might have been blood.
I’m a WA fan, no dog in this fight, I just watched videos of the three plays and would say the following:
1 - First call with knee down
This one looks correct, but I will concede that the angle I saw would be a tough angle to use to overturn a call on the field. If the refs had a side angle then you could be certain.
2 - Second one with knee down
This call was absolutely the correct call. Pretty obvious.
3 - The catch that was overturned
This is what I saw:
a - Player catches ball in air and maintains that grip on the ball through next few steps
b - Left foot lands inbounds
c - As he comes down the football crosses the plane inbounds
d - Right foot has landed by this time
e - Right arm hits inside of pylon
f - Right hand and ball hit ground and ball pops out
I don’t know enough about the official college rules to know if that’s a catch or not.
I just checked the college rules on pass catch to be sure and the pass was most definitely incomplete, no TD, no question about it.
"b.If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without
contact by an opponent) he must maintain complete and continuous control of
the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field
of play or in the end zone. This is also required for a player attempting to
make a catch at the sideline and going to the ground out of bounds. If he loses
control of the ball which then touches the ground before he regains control, it
is not a catch. If he regains control inbounds prior to the ball touching the
ground it is a catch.
c. If the player loses control of the ball while simultaneously touching the
ground with any part of his body, or if there is doubt that the acts were simultaneous, it is not a catch. If a player has control of the ball, a slight
movement of the ball will not be considered loss of possession; he must lose
control of the ball in order for there to be a loss of possession."
I don’t think I can stomach watching the video. What I’m reading online seems to be saying that the catch may have been the worst. But be that as it may, it sounds like the officials were merely incompetent, not corrupt.
There were a total of 5 calls in the game overturned by video replay. That has to be close to a record.
I’m confused, by rule it was an incomplete pass, there really is no question.
We know 2 things:
1 - The ball popped out when ball/hand hit the ground
2 - The rules state that the ball can’t pop out - and if there are doubts about whether it popped out simultaneously or not - it’s not a catch
