2014 College Football General Thread

Are you familiar with the Faux Pelini Twitter account? It’s hilarious and I hope it survives his transition to Youngstown State.

$8 million for getting fired? What genius negotiates these contracts for the universities?

Smart, realistic geniuses?

Look, salaries for coaches have gone through the roof. There is a huge arms race. But the big deal
Here is recruiting (which is AT LEAST 50% of success in college football). That $8 million buyout plays well in the homes of 5-star recruits. If you don’t have a solid buyout and years left on your coach’s contract, you are going to get negative recruited into the Big 10 (or Stone Age if you prefer).

Look at Spurrier at South Carolina… He announces off the cuff that he’s got 2… Maybe 3 years left coaching. What does he get? 4 de-committed recruits in a week. Now he’s got to walk the dog back and say “I should have said four to five, blah, blah, blah, please re-commit to South Carolina…” It’s all about recruiting.

Badgers bring back favorite son Paul Chryst. He grew up in the neighborhood just west of Camp Randall as the son of a local football coach, then sent a bunch of great TEs and one awesome QB to the NFL as an assistant coach under Bielema. Back in Pittsburgh, their AD got fired, but apparently was highly unpopular, so fun times for everyone! Chryst underwhelmed at Pitt, but this was a no-brainer on the part of Alvarez. No one in Madison will miss Andersen. Hopefully Wisconsin football has found their Bo Ryan equivalent.

Thought I’d share this with everyone before it gets fixed (gotta love Wikipedia):
Steve Pederson Accomplishments

I’ve seen a few of those, pretty damn funny, hope it continues also.

Ah shit. Oregon’s second-best player, CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, tore his ACL in practice and is out for the remainder of the season. Depth in the secondary has been a problem for us this year and both FSU and Alabama feature elite receivers. Guess we might have to put up 56 points instead of 42. Hope he makes a full recovery and has a great NFL career.

Yeah, I read that a few days ago. He’s considered one of the best in the country at his position, to the point where his stats don’t show much because teams don’t throw to his side of the field.

Between that and Oregon’s offensive line woes, plus the earlier loss of stars like Thomas Tyner and Pharaoh Brown, it’s a really big ask for them to beat an apparently never-been-healthier FSU. I’d bet my house on Oregon going all the way if everybody was healthy, but now it doesn’t look so good for them.

I also hope that he makes a full recovery and has a long and storied NFL career… but my ticket for the Oregon game is looking better and better! (I got FSU +9 at -110.)

Don’t get cocky, my brother 'Nole! Our secondary is a sieve for an accurate QB and if we can’t get to Mariota it’s got the potential to be a bad night for us. I think we match up well on both the O and D lines, but that secondary and MM have me worried…

I am curious, if they post a 3-25 ranking list before the championship game, will the outcome of the championship likely have any effect on the lower rankings?

Oh, I know. Mariota was amazing all season; he deserved the Heisman this year. But I’m telling you, Winston’s demeanor in the ACC Championship game was markedly different than the rest of the season, IMO because he knew that the charges against him were gonna be dismissed. It had to be a huge weight off his shoulders.

But you’re totally correct in that Mariota has excellent protection, terrific receivers and that our defense is not last year’s defense. Oregon is the first team FSU has faced all season that, on paper, outclasses us and I fully expect them to be a handful. I’m very encouraged, tho, by the swift and correct adjustments that the DC made to counter that triple threat option; that’s a very difficult scheme to play and GT played it damn near perfectly. In the end, FSU was able to counter and dominate them thanks to some very shrewd coaching.

If who posts a 3-25 ranking list? The CFP will not publish any more rankings this season; its job is done once the playoff teams are announced and major bowls are set. (The BCS did not have any rankings after its mid-December ones either, for the same reason.) I doubt that either the Coaches or AP will do any more rankings before the championship game.

However, if Florida State wins a close game over Oregon, then beats Alabama by a considerable margin, don’t be too surprised to see Alabama drop to #3. I doubt that the order of the teams not in the championship game would be affected by the result of the championship game itself.

ESPN Stats tweet:

Somehow Popeyes Bahamas Bowl got elevated to MAJOR status in its very first year!

Love Popeyes Fried Chicken though!!
Anyone know what country could have hosted a bowl back in the 1930s?

My guesses would be Cuba or Mexico.

Cuba. Auburn 16, Villanova 7 in the 1937 Bacardi Bowl.

The Bacardi Bowl was intermittently held from 1907 to 1946. The 1937 was the only edition that did not include a Cuban team.

The Bacardi Bowl is something I could drink to!

Cubra Libres, por favor
Thanks Frank

Interesting that you could get that same ticket today. I would have expected that injury to move the line a couple points.

No, I didn’t get it today; I got that on the 12th. I’ll let you know what the line is tomorrow tho, I’m working near a sports book.

I have watched a little of each bowl thus far and noticed a lot of empty seats. And I mean a lot of empty seats. The Bahamas Bowl attracted a crowd of 13,667 players. The Boise bowl had 18K.

The Vegas Bowl could only attract 33K with a nearby Power 5 team in it (Utah).

Back in the 1980’s I was living in the Atlanta area. And I remember reading many gloom and doom articles about the Peach Bowl’s future because they could never sell their local allotment of tickets. I guess attendance is no longer that critical to a bowls future. Just a Title Sponsor and the TV exposure on ESPN.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Honestly, if we cut a full half of the current bowl schedule out, it might make the remaining half actually worth something to the teams that get invited. Unfortunately ESPN has too many hours of tv in December to fill for that to ever happen. It’s getting close to time to make ESPN do a Ma Bell and break up into multiple networks owned separately.
