Thank you, Thing Fish. I’ll spend more time looking at your link to try and learn more about what the Ducks are facing. But I agree; I’d never characterize the game as a walkover, either.
I guess the only thing I’d mention is, stats don’t reflect the fact that the Ducks let off the gas in many of their games, do they? They pull Mariota and others out (even in the Rose Bowl)… so aren’t stats affected by that? IOW, if he and other top players played all games at their full intensity/capacity, wouldn’t that tend to change the stats some? I never saw Jameis Wilson get any breaks against Alabama.
Am I making any sense?
Not happy about Carrington. What an Oregon way to make yourself ineligible. But it’s practically our state flower, after all.
Exactly. And just as it is illegal to be under the influence of alcohol at work, it will similarly be illegal to be under the influence of THC at work. It’s too bad that THC stays in the system for 30-ish days after use, but few employers can afford the liability of allowing workers to work under the influence – of anything.
In any case, whether Carrington broke a state law in Oregon is immaterial. He broke the rules of the NCAA. No exceptions. I don’t like it, but I completely support it and agree there was no alternative.
Really, dude? You couldn’t wait another couple weeks to spark up? (beats head against wall). Hopefully we will win and this will become an amusing anecdote in retrospect.
One thing I don’t understand: why is Oregon subject to the 20-hours-per-week practice rule just because “spring semester has started”? I thought the rule applied once your season ended, without regard to when spring semester/quarter begins.
Don’t tell me this is the one thing they forgot to change when they authorized teams to play an extra game for the CFP championship. (As I have mentioned before, “technically” the NCAA does not consider this a “bowl game”.)
There was an article a day or two ago in the paper about the academics at Ohio State warning the students about going to the game. Apparently, the semester at OSU begins tomorrow, and if students are not present at their first class (mostly Monday and Tuesday) they are liable to be dropped from the course.
I saw no indication that this would apply to the players. Just another indication, in my opinion, of the disconnect between college and college athletics.
While I won’t doubt that athletes get special treatment, you can usually let the professor know in advance if you’re missing the first day of class and still want to stay enrolled. I can remember a couple of hectic first couple days of the semester trying to rearrange my schedule due to last minute class cancellations and having the thrill of waiting in endless lines during drop/add.
It was funny driving around Lane County today. I didn’t chance Eugene – too much Crazy – but even the little outlying town where I ventured to run a few errands was pretty Ducks Nuts. The flags are flying, the caps and t-shirts are on, everyone’s wearing their beads and their colors. It’s like a holiday around this area today!
Under the old system there was no way the Buckeyes would have been the national champions. But they are today. Is there any argument to be made that the old system was better than a playoff? I’d like to see it expanded to eight teams but tonight, in my Buckeye heart, I’m beyond happy.
