2014 Emmy Nominations

Armisen is also nominated for writing that show, and McKinnon also got a nod for co-writing the song “Home for the Holiday/Twin Bed” for SNL.

Wait – Girls is a comedy series?

I thought it was a shitty drama series about a bunch of unbearably self-absorbed and useless twenty-something drains on society.

It never occurred to me that it was supposed to be funny.

Probably because it’s not. Funny. Or supposed to be, as far as I can tell.

What am I missing?

Personally, I"d put it in the horror category. <shivers>

I agree that Tatiana Maslany was robbed.

Speaking of comedy series??? Orange is the New Black is comedy? Yeah, watching women getting the crap beat of them makes me laugh all the time.:dubious:

Plus this “guest star” crap. Natasha Lyonne and Uzo Aduba are nominated for “guest star”. Um, they’ve been in 25 of 26 episodes each so far. (Sometimes only briefly.) Taylor Schilling has also been in 25 episodes and she’s the lead! OTOH Jason Biggs in not a “guest star” and he’s missed 5 episodes and is barely in several more.

Plus you have Fred Armisen as “Supporting Actor”. What the ??? His name is listed first in the credits! (And Portlandia had a really off season, not Emmy worthy.)

Plus there are categories that make no sense. Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis and Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee are both nominated. But in separate categories. Okay, why? One is “non-fiction” and the other is “entertainment”. Can you guess which is which?

(The more I go over the list, the more irate I become over the nominations for Downton. The show is running on vapors. Other shows deserve the honor.)

Well, I’d guess Zach was in entertainment and Jerry in non-fiction since CICGC is just a basic interview show and BTF is all staged for comedy’s sake.

It’s a black comedy, or a dramedy, or whatever term you want to use. I definitely laughed many times while watching it.

Also, I am not sure which season got nominated. Season 1 was much more of a comedy than season 2.

I agree. Seeing Downton Abbey in the list in place of the more-worthy The Americans is…annoying.

Annoying, too: the gaming of the nominations already mentioned in several posts, here. The Academy should pay attention to the disgruntlement. If the perception is that this is nothing but a coronation of Most Merch Sold shows, their little awards program might become the target of a backlash of public opinion.

Maybe they should switch some of the major categories to the Oscar Best Picture nomination model. That’s where if more than 5 movies get X number of votes (or maybe it’s a percentage), then there can be up to 10 nominees. Best Drama, Best Comedy, Actor/Actress for each, Supporting Actor/Actress for each. The Emmys can get into ruts that last years. Downton Abbey really wasn’t worthy this year, and it wasn’t the best Modern Family either.
