2014 NFL Draft

I don’t understand why Bridgewater is still on the board. He’s the best pure passer in this draft.

Commercial breaks happen for every team on every pick, right?

There is one every three or four on NFL network. On an unrelated note, I play too much fantasy. I just realized the real draft doesn’t snake.

Oh hey, are we having another Bridgewater discussion? I got a few hours to type something up.

Marcus Smith is great, for a third rounder. Everything is terrible and I hate everyone.

Please God, no.

Cards should take Bridgewater.

Bridgewater to Arizona has a certain elegance to it. If you’re going to learn how to be a traditional pro passer Carson Palmer isn’t a bad choice.

ETA: … or not.

Jules, at least it wasn’t Johnny Football. I was expecting them to take a wideout, though. Maybe Kelvin Benjamin.

You’re absolutely right: that does sound nuts.

In all seriousness, I can see where you’re going, but that plan is basically declaring that at least one of these two picks (the 22nd and 35th) is going to go to waste, and I think you kill the expected value of your draft if you voluntarily remove the the possibility of getting two quality starters with such high selections. Yes, you could trade whichever one you don’t want if his reputation is still intact, but (A) it probably won’t be, and (B) you almost certainly won’t get back as high a draft pick even if it is.

Did the Eagles trade executives with the Browns as part of that trade?

Hey, the Pathers finally gave Newton somebody to throw to. Imagine that.

Only thing I can say is the OLB is extremely shallow. Hate that pick even though I like the player a lot.

Slightly off topic: CJ2K is only six seasons into his career. Feels like he’s been around for decades. The Jets might have made a tremendous signing there.

Here.

I’m following along with Chris Burke’s mock from SI magazine and he’s gotten exactly TWO picks right so far…Clowney at #1 and Mike Evans at #7 and that’s it!

Crazy draft, mostly thanks to Cleveland.

I came on just to read SenorBeef ranting about the Manziel pick. I’m underwhelmed. Was expecting some face-screwing or something.

The cost of drafting a QB high and missing are at least two years of your time as a franchise. Two years of your fans having to endure another shitty year. Browns fans are already at the end of their rope. You risk losing a whole generation of fans by fucking it up yet again.

Finding a quality QB is so far ahead of all other priorities an NFL team should have, and the cost of missing on one is so big, that drafting several at a time is not only a viable strategy, but something that should be fairly common.

In any case, QB injuries are common and if both develop, you’ve run into a pleasant problem. You’ve got a good backup and potential trade bait.

I think you may need to factor in the emotional needs of a fanbase as much as expected value of draft picks. Browns fans have endured a whole lot of shittiness and stuck it out better than any other NFL fanbase would. But their patience isn’t unlimited. If Manziel busts, and Hoyer turns out to be a career backup, that’s another likely 2 years down the drain. I’m not sure another two years of unrelenting suck is survivable.

Besides, the Browns have a ton of picks in the top 100. This would be the year to take a flyer on an oddball strategy.

I would absolutely draft Bridgewater at 35, as much as that bucks conventional wisdom.

I don’t hate Manziel like I hated Weeden. He may turn into something good, I really don’t know. It’ll be an exciting ride until he breaks his leg in 4 places before the bye week.

Hoyer is still the best QB on the Browns roster.

What’s that coaching cliche? If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have any? You are taking up a roster spot with a guy who offers nothing unless the first guy is hurt.

Much easier just to draft another guy the following year.
