2015 NFL Draft - On The Clock!

I wouldn’t worry about it. With so many college teams running multiple receiver sets, I think we can expect to see a plethora of quality receivers in every draft going forward. I don’t think these last two drafts have been aberrations.

I wonder how long La’el Collins will last before a team rolls the dice. Can’t say I’d be furious if the Bears gave him a chance, assuming he’s truly not a suspect as seems to be the case, and tried to get him into camp. We certainly could use a OT and we’re due to get lucky on a late draft pick at some point in my lifetime.

In case you missed it, from MMQB:

If he’s there in the 6th or 7th round, assuming you did your homework, I think you take a shot. I bet someone does.

Browns selected a guy who’s listed on draft trackers as “WR”. What position is that?

Woo Hoo! The Packers draft yet another of “my guys” in Jake Ryan. I was hoping it would be in the 5th round, but the 4th isn’t horrible. I watched a lot of his play, and while he’s not going to blow anyone away with his athleticism or instincts, he’s smart, dedicated, and an all around solid player. I’ve only seen him playing inside, so I’m not really sold on his abilities to rush the passer from an OLB position, but he’s also pretty versatile. With the Packers needs, I’m guessing he’ll be an ILB in their 3-4 scheme. I like this pick.

It’s the Browns, so probably Wanted for Reefers.

Well, the Browns certainly built the sort of situation you can drop an inexperienced QB into - a strong running game and a defense to bail them out of trouble. The sort of situation Roethlisberger was able to enter and succeed because so little relied on him.

If that little dickbag can get his shit together and actually try, he might actually be sufficiently effective in such a situation that the Browns might… fuck it, it’s gonna be another 5-11 season and I might as well just jump off a bridge now.

Very glad the Bears added a Safety. I don’t know much about him and haven’t watched any tape, but I like the write up on him. Seems like a solid player and great athlete, not a game breaker but sound and reliable. That would be a asset for this defense.

Looking at the NFL ratings, he’s listed as the 3rd or 4th best free safety prospect and 7th or 8th safety. If those ratings are accurate at all, this probably a great value pick.

Well, that Packers just grabbed the last draftable QB. That’s no shock, but I’m not at all worried. Hundley can’t play at all and even if he could it wouldn’t matter, this is basically a wasted pick. Maybe they hide him and trick a team into a trade in 24 months, but I don’t think he’s got a future in the NFL.

Looks like the Bears are going to not draft a QB this year, anyone else who’s left would be a waste of a pick.

Not a fan of Bud Dupree… was really glad to see the Falcons not take him. He’s Mike Mamula 2.0… a combine freak who made his numbers in the non conference games… Landon Collins is a bit overrated too… the league looked at him judiciously… without SEC colored glasses and saw a box safety with a questionable shoulder who can’t cover the slot…

Quarterbacks were real real thin this year… Jameis was clearly the best… Mariotta? How in the hell is he gonna play Whis’ system in four months?? Never taken a snap under center… hasn’t shown he can throw into tight windows… hell he doesn’t even call plays in the huddle. Whis didnt adjust shit for Jake Locker… he’s suddenly gonna become Gus Malzaghn??

Bud Dupree fell to the Steelers for a reason. I am not happy.

Sometimes I feel like Colbert/Tomlin take a player who will always look like a “steal”, but they don’t pan out.

Look at Jarvis Jones, a “beast” of a pass rusher, but he’s underachieved so much, they take Dupree two years later. But when he was picked, Colbert was praised as a genius, “typical Steeler player”, and it was a “great pick”… But no… not really. He’s been a bust, and an expensive bust at that.

Same thing last year with Shazier. Lots of ESPN drool, but he couldn’t stay on the field. Hey, injuries happen, and I know that… But the guy has been hurt seemingly since the day he first put on his uniform. Maybe this year, he shines… But I will believe it when I see it.

Now Dupree. Queue the “great pick” music, “steal”, blah blah blah. I’ve heard this tune before.

This entire draft has me shaking my head.

Vikings got a great kid in Clemmens in the 4th. He was a projected 1st rounder, and he appeared in almost every mock draft I saw, but he fell… No issues I know of, and haven’t been able to find anything on-line.

The only thing I do know is he has not played much OL, so he has some risk. I thought round 1 would have been a reach, but get him in the 4th? That is great for Minnesota. He has a ton of potential, and he’s big and moves well.

I hope the Steelers take a flyer on Collins, give him an incentive-filled contract and see what happens. They will most likely not find anything but a camp body at this point, so why not take a swing for a potential stud?

There just HAS to be more to this story. I will truly feel terrible for him if he is completely innocent and has missed his moment to be drafted, and make his millions… I know nothing about him, what kind of kid he is, etc… But what has happened to him sucks, especially when you consider the public statements are all “not a suspect”. This story breaks next week, and he is drafted and having a party.

The 49ers take a punter in the 5th Round. What more joy could I receive today?

Lions Pick up Michael Burton. A guy I knew nothing about but is apparently a smashmouth, pass-catching FB.

With 2 guards, an RB and a FB it seems they plan on focusing more on the run next year. Should be interesting to watch.

A swift kick in the balls? A cherry pie with ground up glass inside? Jim Harbaugh being your boss?

That’s just unconstitutional.

Hey, the Patriots drafted a long snapper  in the 5th, so we’re not alone.

Shane Ray is much more of a traditional Steelers pick than Dupree. Somewhat surprising - maybe the lack of DeBeau influence showing?

I still think Hundley really suffered from a poor O-line and shitty coaching staff/offensive system at UCLA. Yeah, he sometimes would sail passes high, but so did Mariota. He’s smart and has all the physical tools one could ask for, so the Packers are a great spot to end up for him - no pressure to start early and a good QB developer in McCarthy.

I don’t think so. Too soon to tell, but Butler worked under LeBeau for years and was supposedly groomed from within to be the new DC. He isn’t changing much on the surface, as the scheme is still the same.

The thing about the Steeler Way is that they almost never take a chance on a character issue. If someone sneaks through, like Plaxico Burress, Santonio Holmes, or Bam Morris… Even if they do produce, the Steelers almost always cut ties with them, either releasing or trading the player.

I cannot honestly think of a player that went into the draft with a known character issue like Ray that the Steelers drafted. Ray may or may not be Steeler-like, but if the Steelers would have drafted him, I would have been surprised. If anyone can think of a pre-draft problem-child the Steelers took a chance on, let us know.

Thinking back, I am pretty sure some folks were concerned with Santonio Holmes… He had (not positive, going on memory here) a couple of children before he entered the draft, but I can’t recall any behavior/drug issues. But when he became a problem, the Steelers tossed away a Super Bowl MVP to the Jets for a bag of chips. I think they got a 6th round pick for him? I am not even sure he is in the league any longer. These guys, by and large, don’t get it. They don’t change their behavior, and they become more trouble than they are worth.

I personally don’t care about the pot issue with Ray. But I do think it shows an incredible lack of maturity, and an arrogance that is not going to change any time soon. These kids have been the BMOC for a while, everyone winks and nods at them, and they get away with a LOT of stuff that they shouldn’t. Sadly, most of these players screw up again, sooner rather than later. For all the things I criticize the Steeler draft philosophy and Colbert/Tomlin for, this isn’t one of them. I think they save themselves a lot of hassle (and money) by just staying away from kids with issues.

I don’t mean in as far as character issues, I mean as far as drafting productive college players vs athletes with potential who aren’t actually good at football yet. Ray is much more polished and productive and ready to go, from what I hear, and Dupree is much more of an athlete learning the game. No?

Best name of the draft: New England takes Georgia Tech center Shaquille Olajuwon Mason. Yes, his mama named him for who you think, he’s just in the wrong sport.
