2018 Election Day Thread

Chuck Todd pointed out this AM on Meet the Press that there is now only 1 Congressional district that touches the Pacific Ocean* that is Republican. Just 1 district, and it’s in Washington state.

*He only talked about CA-OR-WA, leaving out HI and AK. HI is all (2) Democratic and AK is all (1) Republican.

Likewise, there is only one Republican district (TX-23) on the border with Mexico. (Proof to some, I’m sure, of people sneaking across the border to vote.)

NM-02 is Republican.
CA-50 is Republican.

Chuck must be aware that this is an observation that could launch a thousand conspiracy theories.

(And I bet they forget to account for Alaska…)

Are you sure?

I was using this map. Is it wrong? CA-50 does not appear to be on the border and NM-2 is blue.

The 270towin site agrees that CA-50 ends a bit short of the Mexican border, and everything I’ve read suggests that all three NM House races went to the Democrats. Rick Kitchen, what’s your source?

I was looking at Wikipedia. Let me double check.
NM-02 is the entire southern half of the state, represented by Republican Steve Pearce.

And you’re right, CA-50 doesn’t touch the border. The map I was looking at wasn’t detailed enough. Sorry about that.

Hm. Ballotpedia says Pearce lost. Wikipedia says he won. So my source was wrong. Sorry.

No problem–thanks for checking.

Ah, I bet I see the issue…about NM-02 anyway. Pearce IS currently the representative and will remain so till early january, and I bet that’s what wiki was talking about. Pearce did not win NM-02 and couldn’t have, because he did not run–he was running for governor instead (unsuccessfully).

Wikipedia says he lost too. It’s said that for at least a couple of days now. I’m guessing you left a window or tab open without refreshing it; happens to all of us.

Vote. Run out to car trunk and swap sombrero for beret. Vote again.

I’ve heard that’s how it’s done.

Those silly pollworkers never recognize me when I come back and vote a second time in a Welsh hat.

They never recognize Clark Kent when he comes back to vote a second time while wearing his Superman costume.

Long as he doesn’t forget to wear his wimp glasses.

One more race is over: Gina Ortiz-Jones conceded the race in TX-23 to Will Hurd, the GOP incumbent.

Here’s how 538 sees the remaining races:

NY-22 isn’t listed because 538 has called that as a Dem pickup. ABC has also called it as a Dem win; AP is still holding off on calling it.

Trump was blasting Mia Love for losing after she refused to endorse him. I wonder if he will congratulate her if she’s declared the winner.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say “Not a chance in hell, because that would, even implicitly, be admitting he was ever wrong about something.”

Well, right now, Love’s behind by 739 votes, and it doesn’t sound like there’s much left out there to count.

And Valadao’s lead in CA-21 is down to 930 votes.

This is much more fun than that other really long Election Night I remember.

Si… I mean, “Oui.”

538’s calling NY-27 for Collins ®. So that just leaves UT-4, CA-21, and GA-7 as Election Night 2018 hits the two-week mark.

ETA: And the MS-Sen runoff. One week until the polls close on that one.

And AP’s called UT-4 for McAdams. Dems are +39 with only CA-21 and GA-7 in play in the House. Recount in GA-7 starts at 10am tomorrow, Day 15 of our long Election Night 2018.
