UT-4 is the district for Hurricane Ditka who has not been here since election day. Guess he’s in mourning.
Shhh… don’t say his name two more times.
Too late. Once was all it took.
And yes, I mourn the defeat of the black woman Mia Love at the hands of the evil white male, Ben McAdams. Official canvassing is tomorrow, but it looks likely that McAdams won in a squeaker. Shame.
I wasn’t actively posting because I’ve been traveling out of the country. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m back now.
Trump is doing a great job of turning formerly very red districts to blue. Another example is in OK where they just got their first Dem congress person in decades.
UT-4 has not been “very red” ever since it was formed. Democrat Jim Matheson won the district in 2012.
Surprised to see they had a Dem in Congress so recently. I know SLC is very blue area and the 4th district covers part of SLC.
But my main point stands - Trump is driving voters in suburbs to the Dems. And yes I know the GOP picked up Senate seats .
A deep dive into the CA-21 numbers. We probably won’t know the winner until at least next Monday.
It’s got a Cook PVI of R+13. That’s pretty damn red.
Unless I’m mistaken, it’ll be the reddest district represented by a Democrat in the new Congress, and that includes the districts in OK and SC won by Dems, which are both R+10.
Respectfully, I think the Cook PVI is rather skewed with respect to Utah as a whole. IIUC, the Cook PVI is calculated on the share of the votes in the last two presidential elections. Both of those were a bit odd for Utah. In 2012, Mitt Romney was on the ballot. He’s basically a folk hero in Utah, and won a whopping 73% of the vote. For comparison, McCain only won 63% in 2008. In 2016, Utah featured another Mormon, Evan McMullin, running as an independent. He won 22% of the vote and nearly edged out HRC for second place. In spite of the district’s PVI, here have been the results since the district was created:
2012: 49.3% D vs 48.1% R
2014: 46.8% D vs 50.0% R
2016: 41% D vs 54% R
2018: 50.1% D vs 49.9% R
In only one year has the congressional margin of victory been more than a few points.
Why do you think McAdams is evil?
Cheer up; Mississippi could get a black (albeit male) senator next week.
That seems unlikely.
I anticipate either your mourning his likely loss, or else admitting that your earlier attempt at–satire?–was uberlame.
Nah, just kidding!
These days except in rare cases , Dems only win statewide races in the deep south if the R candidate is a pedophile.
It was mostly poking fun at the current trend among SJW’s to assume that white males are bad. I don’t think he’s particularly sinister, but I disagree with many of his preferred policies. He lied to my personally once, which I did not like.
as the old saying goes, how do you know a politician is lying? His/her lips are moving.
Trump is actually quite fluent in American Sign language, but with those teeny tiny little hands…
I suppose that’s true if you’re tautologically defining “SJWs” as “people who assume white males are bad”. In reality, of course, those people who really make such assumptions are an infinitesimal fraction of the voting public, even amongst Democrats, and I doubt they were a significant factor in the Utah elections. Heck, they even vote for white males from time to time.
One could make a much stronger argument that Republicans tend assume anyone who isn’t a white male is bad, particularly when one looks at who they vote for.
Well, I know how that feels. I once met a local MP who immediately revealed himself to be a gladhanding prick. Definitely not voting for him.
I, too, know how that feels. There was a President who lied to me almost daily, which I didn’t like. I didn’t vote for him and never will.
If that was what a conservative thinks of as poking fun, it helps explain why there aren’t any good conservative comics.
But it does make me wonder how one might poke fun at the current trend among conservatives to assume that all SJWs assume that white males are bad. Good Lord, you folks have managed to swallow your own propaganda whole.
