Sad news. The wonderful children’s book writer and illustrator Raymond Briggs has died, aged 88. His most famous works include The Snowman, Fungus The Bogeyman, and the amazing and tragic When The Wind Blows. There are a lot more, and I own most of them, and his detailed autobiography.
Was going through my list last night, just to make sure none of my remaining ten picks had died while I wasn’t looking.
Yep, all still alive and kicking. Plenty of stage 4 cancer patients on the list, so maybe there are still some more points ahead, or maybe I’ll just have a bunch of people to carry forward another year.
Olivia Newton-John was the oldest person on my list. Now that she’s coughed up her 27 points (yes, I’m in that handbasket), only one of them is older than me, so there’s still a chance to move up in the rankings. You never know.
Let’s see: if I put myself on my list, and I kicked the bucket, I wouldn’t exactly be around to enjoy the boost to my score, would I? Doesn’t strike me as a good time.
Seriously, I’m just using my own age as a reference point. I’m getting old enough that I don’t really want to pick people much older than me unless their chances of dying during the year are very good indeed.
From what I’ve seen they’re only keeping her on life support to preserve her organs for donation. Once the doctors determine which of her organs can be donated, her family will pull the plug. So it shouldn’t be a years-long thing. I’d be surprised if it were days-long.
