Does that person serve out the full term or have a special election? I think the seat will remain Democratic, though. Does California often/ever have Republican senators?
I believe whomever is appointed will served the full term, until next election in 2024.

Lord Feldon and D Anconia got points for Dianne Feinstein
Looks like he has committed to seating a Black woman. I don’t know if that gives us a potential list, but he should aim for someone younger to establish a long-lasting impact. I bet they will win in 2024, so this is pretty close to a lifetime appointment if they want it.
I hear she’s still planning on running for office in the next election…
The Onion was ready in advance on this one.
I know it’s a stupid cliche, but honestly, “Too Soon”.
I seriously doubt that. The people who have already announced they are running for the seat are the power hitters - Schiff, Porter, Lee. Newsome has said he won’t nominate anyone who has announced. Nominating another black female to serve the rest of the term would blow Lee out of the water and alienate a huge chunk of people in this state, including me. But that is a discussion for another thread.
He hasn’t gone yet, but comedian and actor Billy Connolly is deteriorating.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Jimmy Carter, down to one point. He is gonna cheat us all,
Breaking on social media: Former Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield dies after battle with brain cancer. He was 57.

Bummer. I have many fine (and not so fine (it’s a Red Sox thing)) memories of dear Timmy Knuckleball. He seemed like a really good, grounded guy.
The second top of 2024 list I lost in a couple of weeks.
When his illness was revealing (against his wishes…go fuck yourself, Curt Schilling), I was looking forward to adding him to my 2024 list.
Former NFL receiver Russ Francis has died at 70 in a plane crash.
He’s not dead, but Engelbert Humperdinck, 87, just canceled a performance due to illness with “no indication that the concert would be rescheduled.”
Hmm.
He’s 87 years old. Time to call it a career, one would think.
I read somewhere else that Paul Simon is losing his hearing, so he can’t play concerts anymore. He sounded relieved about it, as if he needed a justification to quit the road. He’s 82, who needs an excuse at that age?
