While driving through Eastern Washington a few years ago, we were surrounded by fields of a plant with yellow flowers. My wife thought they were mustard plants. We stopped by an old cemetery to take some pictures. While driving through the cemetery, found a couple headstones, Herman and Elaine Mustard and Estel and Marvin Mustard. At the time we thought it was quite ironic. Turned out the fields of yellow were canola plants, not mustard.
In fact, mustard and canola are very closely related. It is almost troubling how important that one plant family is to us.

A stray cat gave birth to kittens on our doorstep in the summer of 1968, and we kept one of the kittens. I named him ‘Hondo’ after Frank Howard.
