2024/2025 Snow Thread

The mountains here (Bozeman) are north of 5’ for the week–2’ at our house. Best storm in a few years.

Its been below freezing for a week, another week of it. The good thing is the lake will freeze meaning less lake effect snow.

Here in NE KS the snow forecast was 12" on thursday and now it’s 18.5". Freezing drizzle now but that’s supposed to stay to the south. North of I-70 will get lots of snow where south of I-70 will get 1/4" ice. I’ll take the snow, thank you.

Southern Ontario here. With the fading of El Nino and the rise of its opposite, La Nina, I was expecting that we might get the opposite of last winter, which had very little snow. Lots of time left for that to happen, but so far what we’ve had is frequent precipitation but still very little snow. Partly because there have been extensive periods of warm weather where we’ve had rain instead, and when we did get snow, so far it’s only been light dustings.

The top speed on I-70 through Kansas City is currently 20mph.

Snowed here last night. Looked nice.
Now turned to rain and mostly gone.

Got about 3 feet at my house (central Colorado mountains). Had to plow 3 times. Reminds me, I need more fuel for plow truck.

Did it ever turn to rain! Flood warnings around an airport you may recognize.

ETA - hmmm, not as clear as I had hoped. That’s Gatwick.

Lawrence KS checking in. Sounds like we got 16 to 20 inches, from what my wife tells me. Plus ice on Saturday evening before the snow started. KDOT actually sent out an emergency alert to phones on Sunday telling people to stay off the roads. Never seen that before.

Little snow here in Montreal (where we normally get 100+ inches of snow a year) - we weren’t on the main storm track. We spend more on snow removal annually (about $200 million a year) - more than larger snowy cities such as Chicago, Moscow, or Sapporo (Japan). This is where a snowstorm that’s less than 18 inches or so is considered a nuisance for a few hours and life goes on almost normally. (in 12 years of schooling, I never had a “snow day”).

Montreal Snow Removal is an Amazing Logistical Achievement

It’s been nearly two months since The Big Snow. The last blob in our shadowy backyard went away 2+ weeks ago. But the people with N. facing houses still had leftover snow piles by their drives. Hardly any snow in between and that just burned off in the Sun very quickly.

Got ~3 inches earlier today. The first that needed shoveling. Very fluffy stuff. Once the Sun came out I used my new sled shovel which worked great in this situation. Didn’t take long which I’m glad for since I’m still getting over a bad bug.

Still nowhere near enough to make up for the dry weather we’ve had going back over 5 months.

I had an eye doc appointment this morning and walked (20 minute round trip). I’ve got 80’ of 2’ deep snow between my truck and the street. 4-wheel drive don’t beat high centered.

We got a bit of snow today for the first time this season. It has already melted. Sierra Vista, Az.

Yeah, ground clearance is very important for us too.

The ever variable weather “forecast” two days ago had said a small chance of snow today, no accumulation expected.

Well, that changed.

Got up this morning to several inches of snow already on the ground, stuff coming down and a good wind. In other words, a blizzard. Nearly white-out conditions. 25 degrees.

But they only had a winter weather advisory. No watch or warning. Said the snow would end about now. Well, it’s still coming down hard and blowing around. The advisory has been extended to late this afternoon. Still only predicting only 1-4" total accumulation. Have these people looked outside the window???

That’s some mighty fine weather forecasting there, Lou.

The snow is just getting started here in Memphis. And, for a change, it was not preceded by rain and ice so this could actually be a pleasant experience. I’ll take that over the brutal winter weather we’ve had the last three years. They say to expect 5-8 inches. Even with that, the temp will be 46 on Sunday so it won’t stick around long.

Got another inch or two last night on top of what we got over the weekend. Schools are closed again today. I think yesterday was the only day they’ve been open all week.

It’s been kind of sunny all week but with low temperatures. The sun helps make the snow slushy during the day, then when it gets dark it just freezes up again.

Re: the unpredicted blizzard.

I went out at 2 yesterday and started shoveling. The “base” amount seemed to be about 6" but the drifts were generally up to a foot. More than that piled up against my garage door. Of course in some areas the snow was more or less blown away. Like a sandwich landing jelly side down, of course, the only cleared area in my shoveling zone was a tiny area surrounded by two larger drifts.

The sled shovel continued to work well. But it required significantly more effort than the previous snow. The wind was still blowing so some areas I shoveled got dusted a bit as I worked. Had to slog lengthwise thru a drift on the side of the house to get to the bird feeder to refill it.

Our street has looked just like a skating rink for several days now. I have to get out and get some supplies. Not sure what the main roads look like. We’re on a ridge and I don’t want to go down the hill if it’s like our street.

High of 39 predicted with lots of sunshine. Hopefully some of the cruft will disappear today.

It’s snowing here now. First time in 3 years, I think.

I’ve still got this. I don’t NEED to drive anywhere, so just waiting it out. The forcast is hinting possibly by next thursday I can get out.
