2024 NBA Playoffs

Kyrie Irving with the insane finish.

Timberwolves swept Phoenix last night, winning a tough game by six points. It was close all the way, with lopsided scoring for both teams. Edwards did his usual thing of doing nothing for the first half and then scorched earth in the second. Towns finally woke up out of his stupor with a double-double. Looks likely that they’ll be facing the Nuggets next.

All other things about his problematic views and being a poor teammate aside, the guy can ball. Wow.

This makes me happy.

That was an insane game between the Clippers and Mavericks. Clippers were unstoppable in the first 18 minutes, building a 31-point lead. Mavs came back and cut the lead to 17 at half, kept whittling away, and were within four at the start of the 4th quarter. Dallas actually took the lead with 2:15 to play, but James Harden (remember him?) took over the game down the stretch and the Clippers won by five. Series is now 2-2 going back to LA.

First time i see a team lose a coach to injury mid game, hope Finch is ok.

I missed that, as I ran out of gas at halftime and went to bed. What happened?

Conley ran into him on the sidelines during a play, they hit knee on knee and he tore a patellar tendon. ETA: here it is.

Ouch! What a freak thing to happen.

What a bizarre injury. It’s probably happened before but if it did, I don’t recall.

Today the Thunder, Nuggets, and Timberwolves all advance. That Lakers-Nuggets game was a brawl to the end, but Jamal Murray was clutch again in the final seconds. The Thunder and Timberwolves both swept. So, teams that are up 3-0 in a series are now 153-0.

Since the Timberwolves blew it at the end of the season, the Nuggets will have home court advantage, with the first game on Saturday. Denver is a tough place to play because of the altitude, but at least MN has gotten a couple of days extra rest. It should be quite a battle.

Oh, and screw the Lakers. Never been a fan.

Off-topic, but I recall Head Coach Dan Devine of the Packers suffering a broken leg in his first regular-season game with Green Bay.

Nuggets looked beatable against the Lakers, trailing almost 75% of the minutes played. Wolves, meanwhile, dominated the Suns. I agree that this could be a helluva series.

Always a nail biter with them, as they kind of loaf along in the first half of their games, then turn it on in the second. That final game with the Suns was very close.

As a long-time Celtics fan going back to the John Havlicek days, I watched that game to watch them die. It was satisfying.

A picture from today’s LA Times:

Just saw this on Twitter:

The Nuggets beat the Lakers on opening night.
The Nuggets beat the Lakers the night the franchise unveiled Kobe Bryant’s statue.
The Nuggets beat the Lakers the night LeBron James became the first player to reach 40,000 points.
The Nuggets beat the Lakers to end their season.

Knicks-Sixers is going to OT. Tyrese Maxey just hit a long 3-pointer to tie the game. Maxey has 41 points.

Philly wins! Nice to see Maxey’s two amazing 3-pointers (to put them into OT) actually lead to a win (unlike the Bucks’ Khris Middleton’s, the other night).

Knicks still likely to win the series, but it’s a fun and raucous one.

Game 6 is in Philadelphia. This series could go 7.

Orlando loses by 1 to fall down 3-2 to Cleveland, tough luck. Indiana embarrassingly lose to the Bucks without Giannis or Dame.

True. Bobby Portis kept his cool, and Middleton reminded us he’s not just a shooter, but had creative inside moves, too.

Whatever happens in this series, though, I don’t think the Bucks will get very far, even if Dame and/or Giannis return (especially not, perhaps, if they both return). This squad doesn’t have the chemistry of their championship season three years ago, even if their defense has improved a bit since Doc Rivers took over a couple months ago. They are old! (So are the Clippers, though, and they’re doing surprisingly well).

Anybody know why the playoff times haven’t been announced for the Wolves-Nuggets? Everywhere I look it just says TBD, but the opener is this Saturday.
