eschereal the seriously twisted:
if we were to promote alternates during the game, would it even make sense to limit it to 3?
There is no official limit to the number of alternates you can have regardless. Not sure where the idea that you are limited to 3 started, but there is no rule on it.
Look at it this way: the more alternates you have, the safer you are if people kick it early or your main list is challenged. The flip-side is you expose your potential future list to more people, and give people fodder to consider for their lists now or in the future.

Drake Hogestyn, Days of Our Lives long-running actor, died at 30 points.
Donald Drake Hogestyn (/ˈhʌdʒstən/; September 29, 1953 – September 28, 2024) was an American actor best known for his long-running role as John Black on the American soap opera Days of Our Lives.
Hogestyn was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he graduated from North Side High School. He attended the University of South Florida in Tampa on a baseball scholarship, majoring in pre-dentistry. He graduated with a double major in microbiology and applied sciences. He was then drafted by two profess...

The day before his birthday too. Alas.
Like sands through the hourglass…
You mean, he missed the last Day of his Life?
I’m still clinging for a tie at 83rd.

Ouch. Glad I got to see him in Beverly Hills Cop 4.
That bastard. I had him on my list for next year.
I thought he looked bad in Beverly Hills Cop 4 .
Death made Frank Coppa an offer he couldn’t refuse. He just didn’t report it until a year after or so.
(I.e. not eligible for points, and sucks if anyone had him last year.)

Wiki article on the guy, BTW, in case you don’t want to get through the NYT paywall:
Frank Coppa Sr. (September 11, 1941 – October 17, 2023) was an American gangster in the Bonanno crime family who was a close friend of Joseph Massino and Frank Lino and made large sums of money in stock fraud schemes. In 2002, Coppa became the first Bonanno made man to turn state's evidence.
Coppa was born in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from high school and spent a few months in college before dropping out.
Coppa lived in New Jersey and Staten Island, but operated his criminal activities...
My favorite role of his was as Marvin in Midnight Run.
I at first thought (when I first watched the movie) that he was football player turned actor Dick Butkus.
Aw, that is sad. Now he’s got nothing left to lose, if that is a consolation. Freedom at last!
It really was a Sunday mornin’ comin’ down.
The ironically-named private investigator Jay J Armes has died at 92.
He was possibly best known for investigating the kidnapping of Marlon Brando’s son, and had an action figure crafted in his likeness, complete with detachable hands to match Armes’ metal hooks.

I re-watched Semi-Tough a week ago and I was thinking how Kristofferson was the only one of the three leads still alive.
That one hits hard. I grew up listening to him. Firmly believe that he and Ani DiFranco are the two greatest American lyricists of the last seventy years.
More points I’d rather not have.
