2026 Canadoper Café is now open!

I will teach my own cats to say ronron because I can always drop them over the border to make their way in the free world.

“Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”

My response would be “Yes, Alberta should remain a province of Canada; No, the Government of Alberta should not commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada.”

However, in this Angus Reid poll, the Federalist side is defined as a “No”, and the separatist side is a “Yes”. Now, I’m a fairly intelligent person, and I still don’t see how that works out with the question as asked, so count me firmly in the 51% who find the question confusing. Also firmly in the camp that says Danielle Smith has handle the issue ‘poorly’ - that’s putting it mildly, in my opinion!

And if the question is confusing, why, that’s when the Clarity Act comes into play!

It’s not confusing, it’s just flat wrong. The question as structured cannot be answered with simply a yes or a no. Either clause individually would be fine, but you can’t put two opposing positions in the same question and expect a yes or no answer.

I loved seeing this moment yesterday, where Manitoba premier Wab Kinew tells Danielle Smith, in the most diplomatic of terms, that she’s full of shit and doesn’t know what she’s talking about.
