If I were @Baker and someone posted an overblown and/or double-spaced list with the expectation that it will be “fixed” for them because they couldn’t be bothered to do it themselves, after instructions on how to fix the problem have been posted more than once, I wouldn’t hesitate to just ignore that list.

For anyone having bother, can I suggest using Notepad to compile the info, it keeps everything exactly as it appears on your screen.

If that doesn’t work, I’m sure someone will mention it…

Already done, although in not explicit terms of the application.

(I only have an iPhone) retyped single spaced in Notes, when copy and pasted here it turned double spaced again. Sent myself a text single spaced; again pasted back her double spaced. Unless someone has a hack for iPhone, I certainly don’t begrudge @Baker taking the Draconian advice above and deleting.

Might I suggest giving the list to someone vis private message, having them fix it and send it back, then you past that corrected list here?

The upper left-hand corner of the reply box has a small M⬇️ next to a small A. Tap on that and you should be able to single-space your posts

Here is Slithy_Tove’s list, without spaces

Jim Belushi
Candice Bergen
Connie Chung
Phil Collins
Alice Cooper
Jeff Dunham
Temple Grandin
Davis Hasselhoff
LaToya Jackson
Madonna
Liza Minnelli
Will Smith
James Woods

Is there a reason why everyone’s reply box is defaulting to double spacing these days?

I can’t say there’s a specific reason, but when I click on the M/A box it switches to the “Markdown Editor” and everything goes into double-spacing. I suspect either it’s a default or a lot of people accidently hit that key and aren’t really aware of it.

OTOH, I don’t see a lot of posts on the Board in general that are double-spaced.

They are only double spaced between paragraphs, not within. The problem with the name lists is that there is a new paragraph every time you hit Return or [ENTER] after each name. In your post, for instance: did you make a double space between your two paragraphs by clicking the M/A box or by hitting Return or [ENTER] twice?
ETA: By copy & pasting your text into a new text document it seems the former is the case, so perhaps you have activated the “wrong” M/A setting too.

In fact, the really misterious thing IMO is the lack of a double spacing only in the last two entries of @Reeses_Monkey’s list in post # 73, but in all the others there is double spacing. Who claims in post #77 that it was not done on purpose, which makes no sense. That is weird.

Welcome to the Sdmb.

Please just type your list out, no numbers, no explanations, single-spaced (if you need to, type it in a txt or doc file and then copy-paste it here with no spaces between entries).

It will not be entered into the contest unless formatted this way.

@Pardel-Lux I’m old. I always double space between paragraphs. I also type two spaces between sentences. That’s how I learned to type.

It is different here. I was taught on a manual typewriter, and learned how to use a slipstick (slide rule), but I continued to learn until new ways stuck.

Here’s you list formatted properly:

Note: this list belongs to @Max1 and not me.

Helping out Baker and the rest of us, who do you mean when you say Sir Tom Baker? The Doctor Who actor isn’t a knight. He was awarded a MBE but that’s not a knighthood. Google shows a Tom Baker as a Saville Row Tailor with a shop called Sir Tom Baker. I can’t find out if he is an actual knight or that’s just what the store is called. I’m also hazy on whether he is at all famous.

@Baker , since Raul Malo decided to be a jerk and die before 2026, would you substitute Billy Joel instead?

Thank you!

That is sure gonna change the sound of the Mavericks.
