More like “what an asshole.” Especially if he knows you’re doing it for specific health reasons. It’s jerky enough to go out of one’s way to tempt someone who’s simply trying to lose weight, but definitely ‘asshole’ territory if he knows you’re hypoglycemic.
Can’t match that one but it has been 4 weeks since having coffee.
Just dropped in to say thanks for the inspiration. I’m ten pounds overweight due to an injury (no biking, no soccer). Then I saw this thread, so…
I’ve started doing no added sugar and minimal carbs… after breakfast. That’s my one compromise… I love breakfast cereal (more than any of my dogs or kids).
Man, it’s almost impossible to avoid bready snacks. I often do my reading and artwork in various coffee joints. Nothing low carb there! Nope, just shelves ‘n’ shelves of scones and muffins… arrrrrgh! I’m trying to fill up before I do that (I’ve been ducking into a local greasy spoon for eggs ‘n’ bacon, just to forestall sugary treats).
It’s tricky at first, for sure. But I’ve come to realize that it’s easier than I thought it would be to avoid added sugar. I’m not doing anything else like low carb or low calories/fat/salt whatever for the time being. Just the no added sugar is enough of a challenge for now.
The constant hungry feeling I had seems to have gone away and I find I’m not even all that hungry at all. I wasn’t hungry at breakfast but still had my oatmeal, wasn’t hungry for lunch but still had my veggie wrap and I wasn’t all that hungry for dinner but ate it anyway.
I haven’t been having the afternoon sugar crash that I normally have and even my skin feels smoother.
It’s definitely more work to choose meals/snacks and prepare them but knowing that it’s not forever - just 30 days - makes it a lot easier.
I’m getting a lot of hunger that’s really “My tummy is bored, and my gut flora wants carbs!”
Just spent an afternoon craving a bowl of Frosted Mini-Wheats, had a bowl of eggs and sausages instead.
Also, crunchiness helps stave off boredom. Carrots dipped in peanut butter are my go-to for “I’ve GOT to have a snack!”.
My substitute for soda (pop) is Pellegrino and POM pomegranate juice.
My cravings have greatly subsided. Today is day 11 and I don’t know if I’m just in the right frame of mind or if I’ve gotten over the craving hump but, while I know I’d enjoy having some goodies, I don’t have the “OMG I need chocolate cookies!!” feeling anymore.
I like carrots for a snack but I like mine dipped in Hummus.
I know fruit juice with carbonated water would be tasty but I’m not having fruit juice. Even though it has no added sugar and would technically be OK - it’s just pure fructose without the fiber.
But I’ve never had Pellegrino, or any kind of carbonated mineral water. Are they tasty plain or are you supposed to add them to something flavourful?
I love Pellegrino plain. Good water with tiny bubbles. I don’t like Perrier as well it has larger bubbles.
Well I tried both Pellegrino and Perrier and disliked both. Ah well, I’ll survive.
Day 14 and I hate to sound zealot-y but there’s been such significant changes in my body that I’m becoming convinced that too much added sugar is really horrible.
I’m having zero blood sugar lows which is a huge change. I’ve passed out with low blood sugar before, which really sucks.
A weird and unexpected change is my feet aren’t sore anymore. I stand for most of the day and, at the end of my shift, my feet are on fire. I almost can’t walk and end up sort of tip toeing around with my feet throbbing. I’m on day 6 of 7 and my feet are perfectly fine. Not even kind of sore which is a huge change.
I normally feel really bloated and my abdomen will be really tight to the touch. That’s completely gone. I’m also hardly hungry at all. The desire to snack and eat and snack and eat just isn’t there. Today a coworker tried to convince me to have some of her chocolate covered popcorn and I just wasn’t interested.
I’ve cut down my GERD meds by half and I’m less gassy. The skin on my face is so soft! But my hair feels sort of dry??
Anyway, I’m extremely pleased with the results two weeks in.
I almost wish I took sugar in my coffee/tea or drank soda, because it would be so easy to give them up. But especially in coffee and tea, sugar makes them taste terrible to me. Yuck.
The 13th of the month seems like a perfectly fine day to start this challenge.
I started considering what I would do then realized that anything but a very restricted, pre-established diet was going to lead to displacement so: Water, tea, coconut milk, peanut butter, meat, vegetables and supplements are all I’ll eat this month or I’ll admit/justify it here.
Hi. Getting back to SDMB after a longish hiatus. I’m in. I lost about 30 lbs last spring / summer but I stopped my disciplined eating around (Canadian) Thanksgiving, and since November I no longer walk to work (I used to live about a 20 minute walk from work, but my office moved 16 kms east. I don’t walk it anymore) I’m noticing some of my new clothes are starting to be tight again. I can’t have that. Having a big number birthday this year so I want to get healthy and be at a more healthy weight by then.
I already gave up pop about six months ago and use a soda stream. I generally just add some lemon or lime juice to the fizzy water. My son likes making assorted concoctions with the sugary syrup but I kicked that and I hate aspartame. I don’t add sugar to coffee or tea. There are herbal teas with “honeybush” in them that the longer you steep the sweeter they become. I know there is a tomato sauce at Costco that is organic and no added sugar.
P.S.Floaty-Gimpy We do have to connect sometime I go to the Island. I’m there almost every month. (My parents live in Parksville, so every visit includes Nanaimo)
There is half a tin of Danish butter cookies in the house. I’m sending them to school and events with my son. (He has inherited my family’s love of feeding others… but missed the ectomorph somatotype.) The chocolates are gone. I had 0% fat greek yoghurt and some canned pineapple (canned in own juice) with a sprinkle of chia seeds.
First day, first failure and now I’ll do at least one notch better tomorrow.
Oh, I must try this Honeybush tea!
And yes, we should! I’m in Parksville, too, so even more convenient.
Definitely joining you. My doctor told me I am definitely not diabetic, but still, sugar has No redeeming value. Most fruits are sweet, so that’s where I go if I want sweet. I don’t always want that, sometimes after I’ve eaten chocolate, I get a craving for healthy food, like green beans.
Blueberries are my new best friend. I have them everyday, along with banana, in my oatmeal.
Second day: Failure, smaller than yesterday’s, bigger than tomorrow’s.
You can do it!
Well I’ve cheated. I’m sick with a sore throat. I stuck it out yesterday but today my throat is on fire so I’ve had throat lozenges, diet ginger ale with orange juice and Nyquil - all of which have sugar or sugar substitutes.
Ah well - I only feel sort of guilty.
Eventually. Not today though! It was a slighter slip-up than last time, I might hold to it 100% tomorrow. I know it’s worth it but my gut doesn’t know that enough when the cravings hit.
