Re: synonyms in other languages: in Italian, the word for “drunk” is “ubriaco” (oo-bree-AH-ko). In the Florentine dialect, the hard “c” is aspirated as an “h,” and the initial “u” is often dropped.

In his book Words, Paul Dickson lists 2,231 synonyms for drink “without resorting to” changes in syntax or "one-liners starting with the phrase “He’s so drunk that”…

Odd coincidences, Pipeliner! I was reading this while lurking at work and recalled a long-ago independent study on slang. I’d read about the Aztec “rabbit scale”, too. Maybe they used rabbits because pink elephants weren’t native to Mexico? <g>
