5/5 - Hugh Howey's SF Silo Series to be series on Apple TV

Anyone else notice when the power went out that the vliewscreens flickered briefly with a lush green landscape image?

Ooooo… nice touch!

(I haven’t seen this series, but I have read the books so I know how this all ends up, assuming they follow the books pretty closely, which it sounds like they are)

Same - I’ve read the book so know the main plot twists coming, etc. So when I saw that in the show I thought it was a clever addition.

Really starting to fade on this series. I’m finding Juliette to be unlikeable. This characterization is just not working for me.

I had read the first books years ago and I remember not being particularly impressed by the story. Can’t remember specifics, but I think it had something to do with finding the universe not very believable. It’s possible that the later books might fill out the back story, but I never tried to read them.

Following the books lasted about 2 episodes. At this point, other than being in a silo, it’s completely unrecognizable.

The last few episodes have re-invigorated my interest. I thought the first two episodes were fantastic, then there was a bit of a lull with more repetitive backstory on Juliette than we really needed (along with the unbelievably stupid turbine repair scene). But now that the conspiracy plot has kicked in, I’m enjoying it more again, although it hasn’t returned to the heights of the first two episodes.

A few episodes left, I hope the conclusion of season 1 isn’t disappointing.
I’m not loving the direction the show has been moving.

It’s been long enough since I read the books that I don’t really remember much of the plot and characters, and thus I haven’t really noticed any deviations. I’m enjoying it so far.

I didn’t know who Rebecca Ferguson was before watching Silo. I really think she is a perfect fit for Juliette. She is a rare true bi-lingual (English, Svenska) - her English is interesting in that it’s not exactly a recognizable accent. It gives her a bit of an air of mystery. I think she’s a more likable Ellen Ripley. I’m a couple episodes behind.

We are still really enjoying this, I would say especially the last two episodes. Billings is becoming one of the most interesting characters. I like Juliette a lot more as some of her mother’s death story is filled out. My only complaint is that I can’t really compute Harriet Walter or Sophie Thompson, who are both doing a great job, with non-British accents but I’m still glad they are key characters.

I really have liked Rebecca Ferguson in previous movies/shows- especially as Rose the Hat in Dr. Sleep.

Well, at least they finally gave some indication (although subtly) that there are other silos.

What was the subtle indication that there are other silos? We missed it in our house.

Bernard had a blinking keychain or something like that with an 18 on it. They’re in the 18th silo.

That just means his food order is ready to collect from the bar.

I actually thought that was a reference to the hard drive (“serial number 18 - which is a one followed by an eight, also know as 18” - Robbins killed in that delivery). The blinky thing meant the drive had been plugged in to the network.

I don’t think the drive is a red-letter relic at all. It was stolen from IT, but was in active use before that (hence the video of the cleaning).

If true, that would be quite the red herring since they were silo #18 in the books.

I was very onboard with this show early on because I’m a sucker for any sort of post apocalyptic sci-fi but holy shit is the pacing slow. The pacing was very fast in the first 2 episodes, I’m guessing to hook people in, and it feels like we’ve had about 2.5 episodes of plot in the 7 episodes that followed.

The last episode ended in what seemed like it was supposed to be some sort of big reveal when they show the cleaning video with the birds, but we literally already saw this same thing in episode 2. Sure, the particular characters here haven’t seen it, but it was played as though it were the big exciting episode-ending reveal to the audience.

I know it’s based on books so it has probably a finite story to tell (depending on how far it diverges I guess) but it feels like they’re really stalling on the main mysteries. And I’m not someone who needs an A plot, B plot, C plot type storytelling, but they designed this show pretty much to only have an A-plotline and yet they’re stalling on it, which must break some cardinal rules of writing. They could’ve potentially dragged it out at this pace by putting in some interesting B and C plots, but they haven’t.

I was enthusiastic for a few episodes but it feels like we’re being out for little reason. Which is a little weird given it’s appletv+ - I think their style would fit with a high quality, faster paced series. They don’t have to drag it on forever like network television would. Ah well. I’ll keep watching but I’m losing interest.

You’re certainly not wrong, and I think it was a bit of a bait-and-switch to have the first two episodes be so fast paced. That said, I’m enjoying the world building, production values, acting, and general ambiance enough that I’m still definitely looking forward to each episode. And I think the past 3 or 4 have been quite a bit better than the slowest patch in the middle of the season.

I was going to post this earlier because the last 2-3 episodes, we’ve looked at each other at end and said, this series is so good. I really enjoy watching the different characters responses to glimmers of possible truth. My favorite scene in the last episode is when Sims wife decides not to attack Juliette and instead lets her go, even giving her the heads up that they will know where she is, all because she saw something incredible on that hard drive that changed her thinking completely. There is plenty of action too but by far the character reactions as they are exposed to some version of “truth” is more interesting to me.
