Wayward Pines Season 1

Who’s planning on watching this? It looks like another Twin Peaks ripoff, but it may be interesting. Episode 1 is tonight.

Wayward Pines

I’ve been looking forward to it. It looks creepy. BTW, I think I must be the only Doper who’s never watched Twin Peaks. I really oughta rectify that.

I have it set to record. Even though Terence Howard makes my skin crawl. That my help!

I read the books earlier this year, and I’m a little skeptical. I enjoyed the setup and exploration of the premise, but the books had a sudden reveal that was, for lack of a better word, Shyamalan-esque. So it will be interesting to see if the writers can overcome this and create a satisfying story arc.

You know he’s the exec producer an the director of the first episode.

It’s on Netflix streaming, if you have it. I highly recommend it.

Looks more like (a less surreal version of) The Prisoner than Twin Peaks to me.

You… are number 6…

I’ve asked the mods to change the title so this thread is just for episode 1.

I recorded it, and hope to watch it before the next episode. Seems like there are an unusual number of interesting mini-series/events/summer programs this year. Aquarius caught my eye, and something else but I can’t remember the name…

Be seein’ ya!

I liked the first episode, but it seems like the type of thing where the writers could end up building a web of complications that have no logical resolution.

Kate (or possibly Burke) is confused about the passage of time.

The auto accident was apparently staged, seemingly with the intent that Burke survive without serious injuries. How is that possible?

Are “they” (whoever they are) able to play with people’s heads and plant memories or confusion? If so, then is all of this in Burke’s head? I hope not. That would be a total scam on the viewers.

And why the hell would you fake crickets? Is keeping real crickets out really worth the trouble? Given that there are clearly real woods surrounding the town, would it even be possible to keep real crickets out?

Nope, I’ve not seen it either. Well, I did try to get into about a year ago and it just didn’t click. It may be that one needed to be watching it on a weekly basis when it was first run and everyone was talking about it.

On his TV Talk Machine podcast, TV critic Tim Goodman said the show takes a big left turn in episode 5.

So don’t know if it has a satisfying arc but I’m guessing the reveal is still there.

Shit, I totally forgot about this. I will have to see if I can catch it on demand. I read the books last year and they were good for what they were. Hopefully the show will be at least somewhat entertaining, unlike Under the Dome.

To be fair, I’m not sure one should go into Twin Peaks with the expectation that it’s “good” (although like the proverbial curate’s egg bits of it are excellent). Mostly it’s just “really, really weird” in a way that has been imitated by others since (most notably Lost). So by all means watch it to see what the fuss was about but don’t be disappointed if you come away feeling a bit “meh”.

Regarding Twin Peaks, I think the authors and directors of Wayward Pines are deliberately alluding to it. For example, the “Welcome to Wayward Pines” billboard in the opening is likely inspired by the “Welcome to Twin Peaks” sign. Also, the crickets are reminiscent of “the owls are not what they seem”.

Overall though, I think there are more parallels to The Prisoner. A government agent who’s become a potential liability is involuntarily confined in a model community that is actually a prison.

I watched it a couple of weeks ago on Hulu. I’ll keep watching, if for no other reason than to find out how it ends.
Lots of weirdness, obviously, but at times it almost felt a little too weird. It looks like it has potential though, and since it’s only 10 episodes it doesn’t really require that much of a long term commitment.

BTW, I think Melissa Leo is a shape-shifter. I didn’t realize she was playing the nurse until the credits. The same thing happened when I watched Prisoners.

Is it only 10 episodes in the first season or is there only 1 season?
