54% of Republicans say that, "deep down," Obama is a Muslim

It’s what their trusted “news sources” tell them to think. Then the “reason” out that he’d have motive to keep such a thing secret, as obviously he’d be unelectable as a Muslim, so they figure it must be true.

Well said.

For the same of my sanity, I am going to just believe that most didn’t take the poll very seriously.

I’m with you here. This makes sense. (It’s a little like the business in “Oh God” where George Burns says, “Jesus was my son. Buddha was my son. Mohammed, Moses, you, the man who said there was no room at the inn, was my son.”)

I don’t get what you mean here. Are liberals against any majority? Hardly! We depend on such majorities as those who oppose racism, those who oppose sexism, those who defend freedom, and so on. The majority (slender though it may be) of good people.

Help me out, as I don’t follow you, although I think I will agree once I get it.

So what? That article makes no comment on whether people think well or ill of him. In America, don’t you have freedom of religion?

So that’s a ridiculously obvious false understanding of the world, to a degree that’s shocking to me. And these people vote, influencing the country and the world.

During his first campaign, then-Senator Obama insisted that he believed marriage should remain legal only between a man and a woman. After his second campaign, he announced his views had “evolved,” and he now supported legal same-sex marriage. We then learned that this was a deliberate lie – he had favored same-sex marriage during his campaign, but deliberately concealed this preference in order to enhance his electability.

I don’t believe he’s a Muslim.

But it’s worth pointing out that I also believe that if he were, he would have had no qualms lying about it.

Of course, by the same logic, with no more campaigns ahead of him, he presumably would now be free to announce his evolving views on religion.

In any event, I don’t think he’s a Muslim, but I don’t base that opinion on my regard for his honesty on the point.

I don’t personally believe that Obama is a 5,000 year old space vampire who sleeps on a pile of human skulls in an underground lair deep beneath the Oval Office. That said, I understand that for purely political reasons, he would be inclined to lie about it if it were true, so I have to admit it’s possible.

You state that this was lie as if it were an established fact. Where is the evidence? If Obama was on trial, accused of lying about his views on ssm, would the recollections of one man, David Axelrod, be enough to convict? Perhaps the jury could be convinced that the witness spiced up his story in order to sell more copies of his memoirs. The witness also made statements about Mitt Romney’s concession call to president Obama which were later disputed by aides to Mr. Romney. Which is correct? I’m afraid I’m going to have to declare a mistrial.

I’m reminded of the climactic scene from Chinatown where Jack Nicholson slaps a Republican played by Faye Dunaway, trying to get the truth. (Spoilered for those who’ve not seen the famous film.)

– Slap
“I’m an idiot!”
– Slap
“I’m an asshole!”
– Slap
“I’m an idiot!”
– Slap
“I’m an idiot and I’m an asshole!” Breaks into violent sobs.

This might have an effect on his re-election. Oh wait. . .

Quite a leap, there, going from making false statement about one non-religious belief on the campaign trail to spending hours in church as a masquerade for his fundamentally held religious beliefs.

If your kids lie about taking a cookie from the cookie jar, will you assume they would have no problem lying about loving you if they were just waiting for you to shuffle off the coil and leave them their inheritance?

Yep, it’s code speak. Let’s others know that he is not one of us. Not a true American like you and me. That and we can’t just call him the N-word because then people will call us racist. Yep, Muslim, not born here, not my President and socialist are all part of the code. Or are they just guidelines? :dubious:

It’s just remarkable that, in the 21st century, so many are still so accepting of this weird shit idolatry nonsense. like one set of fake icons is better or worse than another.

Honestly folks, the issue isn’t which false idols.

Excuse me … I have to go make a sacrifice to the volcano.

That’s a fair point.

If a future Obama memoir confirms the lie, then I’ll accept it, but your point is well-taken. Only Axelrod has made the accusation; Obama hasn’t admitted it. That’s not strong enough evidence to uncritically accept it as true.

No, here I disagree. I think Blank Slate rebuke was solid: I was accepting Axelrod’s story uncritically as proven, when it’s anything but. But this, i don’t agree with. I think a willingness to lie about the first issue – not a one-time statement but something repeated several times throughout his campaign – is a fair reason to suspect his willingness to be deceptive about his religious practices.

IF it were shown he was deceptive, which I agree has not been shown.

Ah… but WHICH volcano?

It’s important!

In a completely unrelated poll: 54% of Republicans are stupid assholes.

This bugs me because there is a factual answer, it’s not a secret, and either you know or you don’t.

He is a member of the UCC. He converted to Christianity as an adult. His wife is a Christian. This is public knowledge. For most practical purposes, unless you’re Jack Chick or something, he is what we call a Christian.

ETA: OK, I looked at the link. Yeah, I’d go with “who knows,” which is a good answer when asked about the actual beliefs of many, many politicians. But Muslim? In what sense? if he’s a Muslim, he’s not a good one.

Great! Now he’s Jewish!
