54% of Republicans say that, "deep down," Obama is a Muslim

It’ s not enough to make sacrifices to a volcano. You had better make sacrifices to the right volcano, and they’d better be the right kind of sacrifices, or you’re just throwing potentially useful stuff into lava, which is a waste.

It’s obv not the volcano used by the aggressive, narrow-minded, bigoted funamentalists. That would be crazzzzy.

Emphasis added. Converted from what, and how is that factual?

BTW, I would say the answer to the OP is at least somewhat related to the reason that many liberals in this MB think Obama is really not a Christian. Too often, we see what we want to see.

I can name several prominent men of the Left (Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins among them) who have stated confidently that Obama is an atheist. I KNOW many liberals who love Obama but are sure that, in his heart, Obama is really an atheist or agnostic.

Does that outrage you? If not, why not?

Personally, I have ALWAYS stated that Obama is just what he claims to be: a very liberal Protestant. However, it’s always been clear that he has a special place in his heart for Islam, and that Islam touches him and moves him in ways that Christianity doesn’t. I’m sure that’s partly because of his father. MANY boys idealize fathers who abandon them, and Barack Hussein Obama is one of them. His father was a drunken bum who never gave a damn about him, but Obama idealizes his Dad and his Dad’s heritage.

Obama can be almost poetic in describing what he loves about Islam (as when he says the sweetest sound he knows is the Muslim call to prayer). Can anyone think of a time he’s ever said anything so eloquent about Christianity?

I would class the survey as fairly obvious bullshit with an agenda.

The person who did the survey said pretty clearly that he phrased the question to encourage the answer he got, and I did not see anything about his sampling or whatever he did to get a valid result.

People hear what they want to hear, and that includes the guy who did this survey. It also includes the people on the SDMB who think Obama is an atheist, based on the same level of evidence that Birthers have.

Shodan

Didn’t you, quite famously on these boards, recant your former opposition to gay marriage? Being a high profile conservative on these boards, I would think you’d use less personal example :dubious:

Note something else about the survey results: ONLY 42% of Democrats believe Barack Obama is a Christian!!!

Does that mean 58% of Democrats are idiots? Why do DEMOCRATS have any doubts about Obama’s religious affiliation?

Obama says he’s a Christian. Why do the MAJORITY of Democrats either disbelieve him or claim not to know what he believes?

Wishful thinking I guess. I’m hoping he’s an atheist.

Yep the GOP Hate machine has really been running overtime generating the most outlandish lies about the President.

It tells me that 54 percent of Republicans do not adequately hide their bigotry. That is not to suggest that all Republicans are bigots, or that all bigots are Republican, but merely that at least 54 percent of Republicans are the kind of bigots who do not know or care to hide this fact about themselves. I would suppose a large number of them use the Muslim thing to proudly imply that they are bigots.

It also tells them that at least 54 percent of Republicans are divorced from reality and don’t give a shit about the facts. In the name of bigotry. The actual percentage that are divorced from reality and don’t care about the facts I would suppose is higher than 54 percent, because I cannot imagine that when 54 percent of Republicans are stupid enough to announce to a poll taker that they are bigots, that the other 46 percent are a mixture of people who aren’t so stupid as to announce their bigotry to strangers hiding among a small percentage of Republicans who are not actually bigots. Hey, it could happen.

I think a lot of them are the same people who think he’s got a shot at being elected for a third term.

:smack:

I think that 54% is made up of two groups - on the one hand, you have the ignorant folks who believe this is true because their party pundits have said or implied that it is so, therefore it must be true. On the other hand, you have the folks who are smart enough to know that they can’t publicly say they dislike Obama because he is black, so they affiliate him with the Muslims, a group that is highly unpopular in America right now.

Interesting poll. Scott Walker says he doesn’t know if Barack Obama is a Christian. Why Walker, or any other politician, would be asked that question raises other questions about the agenda of the person asking Walker this question but that’s for another thread. Regardless, an internet, and media, kerfuffle is born.

*When Wisconsin Gov. and top-tier GOP presidential hopeful Scott Walker was recently asked whether Barack Obama is a Christian, he famously responded “I don’t know.” This provoked no small kerfuffle.

But here’s the interesting thing: Walker’s statement actually places him in the moderate wing of the Republican Party. Indeed, saying “I don’t know” puts Walker not far from the average American, period.*

Looking at the results of those polled, it appears that Obama has not done a very good job of educating the public as to what Obama believes deep down.
The question - “Which of these do you think most likely describes what Obama believes deep down?

The choices are:

  • I don’t know
  • atheist
  • Christian
  • Muslim
  • spiritual

83% of Republicans polled either don’t know what Obama believes, or believe that Obama believes deep down (favors? actually is?) Muslim.

73% of independents polled either don’t know what Obama believes, or believe that Obama believes deep down (favors? actually is?) Muslim.

36% of Democrats polled either don’t know what Obama believes, or believe that Obama believes deep down (favors? actually is?) Muslim.

9% of Republicans polled describe Obama as Christian.

16% of independents polled describe Obama as Christian.

45% of Democrats polled describe Obama as Christian.

The mystery that is Obama continues.

Son, have you ever considered a career in the Armed Forces?

In other words, MOST Democrats either don’t know that Obama claims to be a Christian or don’t believe him.

Why are so many liberals only outraged about the REPUBLICANS who don’t believe Obama is a Christian?

It would seem that his attending church with the preacher who got him into so much trouble-was it “G-ddamn America?”-wouold inticate that he is Christian.

I work with several conservatives who sincerely believe Obama is a muslim. Two seriously believe he is the anti-christ. This poll doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Maybe because, to a Republican, his not being Christian means he’s incapable of being a Real American President? Democrats don’t tend to associate religion with politics, at least in my experience. Personally, I don’t care what religion my politicians are.

But hey, good job on the attempt to paint liberals as hypocrites, rather than actually addressing the issue.

Question: Why do Democrats *care *whether Obama is more Christian or less Christian? They seem anxious to affirm an image of him being Christian. It’s almost as if in their minds, they think that being “more Christian = politically good” and being “less Christian = politically bad.”

Many have a negative association attached to it. Hence the belief that Obama is just faking being religious, because he’s “too smart to actually believe all that Christian bullshit”.
