The other day it was about 66 degrees F here. (“Here” being the Northeast.)
I was listening to a radio show. They were talking to somebody. I don’t know where the person was located; somewhere in the Sunbelt.
“What’s the weather like where you are?” the hosts asked.
“Oh, it’s wonderful,” the guy replied, “90 degrees and sunny.”
“I’m so jealous,” both hosts replied simultaneously.
Well…I wasn’t jealous, not at all. To me, 90 degrees is uncomfortably hot. 66 degrees is just about right.
I’m not going to make this into a formal poll, but I am curious…which temp do you prefer? You can express a general overall opinion, or specify that what you choose is valid for late spring/early summer, if that makes a difference. Thanks!
I don’t mind 90 degrees once in a while if the humidity is low. Real low. Heck, I’ve even enjoyed temps over 100 in the desert. To me, that’s better than 66 and damp and windy.
But I’ll take 66 and damp and windy over 90 and humid any day.
My ideal temperature is a bit warmer than 66, but I’ll still take that over 90 any day. The only thing 90 is good for is swimming, and you can’t do that all day.
It depends on the humidity. I love hot and dry; every year in Southern Ontario there are one or two blessed hot, sunny days where the humidity is low and it seems like everyone is outside enjoying the holiday. But humid is more usual when it’s hot.
That’s not to say that cool and dry can’t be pleasant as well.
It depends what you want. I cannot imagine why a normal person would want it to ALWAYS be the same temperature, or for that matter be the same temperature in all times and places.
Sunning myself on a beach in the tropics? Sure, I’ll take some of that 32C.
Playing softball next weekend? That’s too hot. 23-24 C would be perfect.
Out for a run? It’s better to be cooler. 10-15C is ideal.
The variance between temperatures and seasons is what makes them feel nice.
I grump when the temperature cracks 70. In my ideal world, the temps would stay between the 30s and the 50s at all times. The thermostat in my office is set to 65, and at home, it’s at 68.
Which all makes you wonder why the hell I’ve never moved out of Los Angeles.
I’ll take both.
90 and dry is comfortable
90 and humid during a hard bike ride makes the post ride shower the best ever. (I admit 90 and humid in a suit sucks)
66 is great for an early morning bike ride the weather is nice and nipply, but not as a daily high temp.
Give me 66 at night and early AM with 90 and dry for a high temp.
66 F is lovely. In my perfect world, the temperatures would never get about 70, 75 tops. And I do love four seasons, and winter, and snow and cold and all that.
90 might be OK if it’s desert-arid, or I’m on vacation and choose to do nothing but lounge beach or pool-side, or swim. However here, when it’s 90 it’s invariably also quite humid and hot, humid weather makes me unhappy.
Frankly, the only time I actually like 66 is early enough in the spring or late enough in the fall that it’s a warmer-than-usual day for that time of year.
But summertime? I love the heat of summer, even here in the muggy DC area, where I’ve spent most of my summers. 90 and muggy doesn’t bother me in the least; I get out on my bike and come back drenched in sweat, and I love it. And I love coming home from work and, for months on end, not having to think about what to change into, but just grabbing a pair of cutoffs and a t-shirt and knowing that’ll be just fine.
It’s warm enough to walk around in shorts and a t-shirt, and cool enough (with the low humidity) to not even break a sweat. We had a really spectacular spring this year, but the summer is now upon us…
