68 years old, hair growing back

After I retired about 5 years ago people started making occasional comments that my hair was looking thicker. The comments have started becoming more frequent this past year. I lost most of my hair on top by the time I was 25, started loosing it at 20. The hair line was still there but it wouldn’t grow much over an inch long and it was very very thin. In photos I would appear bald.

If I shaved my head it would grow back the same way, reach about 1" and then break off. I never cut the hair on top unless I was cutting it all off. This past year I have to cut my hair on top about every 3 weeks when I do my normal haircut. I let some of it grow out to about 4" but prefer to keep it shorter. In my current photos my hair is now thick enough where it at least looks like I have hair on top. Still thinning but I would say at least 5 times as thick as it was and much longer with thicker individual strands.

All 4 of my brothers started showing signs of hair loss in their late 40’s and by the time they were in their late 60’s the hair loss was substantial and they are pretty much bald on top.

Why the hell would my hair start growing back??

High testosterone levels are one element (though not determinative) in male pattern baldness. If your testosterone levels are falling as you age perhaps it or some other male hormone on the decline is retarding hair growth less than it used to.

That sounds very plausible, I have noticed a decline in testosterone based on muscle loss and some decline in libido.

The same thing happened to my grandfather around the same age.

I thought this was going to be about hair growing ON your back, and I was all set to sympathize, as I have the same issue. Hair on your head growing back? It don’t happen to me…

I’ve only encountered very minor hair loss (just turning the corner on the big 5-0 next month).
The “good” news is that whatever hair that isn’t coming out of the top of my head, is now coming out of my ears and nose.

I trim my nose hair more often than I cut the grass.

Maybe you’ve got the lawnmower’s deck height set too low.

I gave myself a nasty cut on the nostril that way.
