84th Academy Awards 2012 - ongoing discussion thread

If you live near certain big cities, there will be one theater that shows the live-action shorts, the animated shorts, and the documentary shorts on one screen for a couple of weeks around Oscar time. If you don’t live near those cities, you’re out of luck. Some might eventually show up on DVD. Some might eventually show up on YouTube.

Unless I missed it buried in this thread, no talk about Viola Davis losing? I know The Artist won Best Picture, but I thought after the number of awards Hugo got that Scorsese may have gotten Best Director. Might have made up for the times his Best Pictures didn’t garner him a Best Director award.

No, it was fairly clear that Hugo wasn’t being given the major awards. Look at the winners in each category:

Hugo won the lesser awards - Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. The Artist won two of the lesser awards - Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. It won three of the big awards - Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. It was obvious that the Academy was saying that while Hugo was better in its technical aspects, they preferred The Artist overall. This is actually fairly common for the Oscars. They will favor one film for technical awards but another for major awards. NOTE: I am NOT saying I agree with the Academy about the respective merits of the films. I am only saying that I see what they’re saying about the two films.
