Jessica Chastain (god she’s beautiful, and such a great actress) and Idris Elba present Cinematography. Birdman or Ida?
Birdman.
So glad Mr. Turner was nominated for this too. Every scene was like a painting.

Me too. I have to watch a lot of shitty kids’ programming and movies so anything that elevates it into something I would watch alone without the kid is fantastic… Like My Little Pony, the inspiration for my username.
Yes! I was thinking that too.
Lego was the best animated movie of the year, but Princess Kaguya was the best animated of the group(and it would be nice to give a hand-drawn movie the award).
I would have ranked Big Hero dead last of the animated nominees. I thought it was totally average.
Yes!!!
Who’s the kid with Octavia Spencer?
Playing nto the commercial break with “I’m Alright” from Caddyshack. Woot!
It’s a shoutout to a scene from “Birdman”.
Meryl Streep does the In Memoriam. Please no clapping.
The memory part. Good. I’ve always forgotten by this time who died early last year.
Wow. Meryl Streep gave a very moving speech.
Thank God they’ve gotten away from having somebody on stage singing during the In Memoriam. It only drew focus away from remembering those folks. I thought it bordered on rudeness. Glad they’re not doing that here.
I recognize (but can’t place) the music for the Memoriam segment… anyone?
So many great people gone. Malik Bendjelloul hit me especially hard. He made the amazing Searching for Sugar Man which won the Best Documentary Oscar just 2 years ago.
Is that Jennifer Hudson? Wow.
And now I see I’ve spoken too soon. You know, Oscar producers, for a show that’s always so pressed for time, an obvious thing to cut would be the song for those that have passed on. Awards shows never had a singer during the In Memoriam until a few years ago, when it became a “thing” that only distracted from the montage. So there’s really no reason to have an additional song put in after the In Memoriam, you know.
At least Jennifer Hudson isn’t singing during the montage, though. One-half credit for that.
How do they decide who is in the memorial? Is It based on SAG status or something? Cuz if I’m not mistaken, Rick Mayall (Drop Dead Fred) was left out of this one, and the Golden Globes. Unless I missed him, which is possible.
Did I miss him, or did they just leave Philip Seymour Hoffman out of the “In Memoriam” segment?
Also, when did they stop showing clips from some of the actors who’d passed? That always used to be my favorite part of the Oscars.
I liked the watercolor portraits, but Robin Williams’ artwork looked nothing like him.
It almost always provokes controversy. It isn’t by SAG.
I’m not sure who decides. I want to say Andy Griffith was left off last year(or the year before) and they decided he was mainly remembered for TV even though he was in plenty of movies.
I don’t know who picks.
PSH was probably in the 2014’s “Memoriam” segment as he passed away prior to the ceremony. I’m pretty sure he was, as a matter of fact.
Yep. He was in last year’s.
