Now you’ve got this in my head. Now you do too…
I heard a comedian (I forget who) a few years ago saying that there must have been one person whose birthday was September 11th, 2001. And they woke up that day, ate their breakfast without turning on the TV or going online, when they got a phone call from a friend who said “Oh my God, do you know what’s happening today?”
And that person said “HELL YEAH!”
Perhaps it’s too Gottfriedesque for the OP’s taste, but I thought Louis C.K. was funny with this one (less funny now in retrospect – not because of 9/11, but because of Louis):
“You can figure out how bad a person you are by how soon after 9/11 you masturbated, like how long you waited. And for me it was between the two buildings going down.”
(Also, did an audience member’s response to Gottfried’s line launch the popularity of the expression “Too soon!”? I think I’m remembering that right.)
Not quite the same, but my niece was born on 9/11/2021. Her mother (my sister) lived outside of DC at the time and had to fight a lot of traffic to get to the hospital.
She has said several times that it was very confusing to her to hear others talk so emotionally about “9/11” when she was young. She’s adapted to it, though. Still, I don’t envy her.
Do you mean 2001?
Another one from SNL: Ashton Kutcher guest-starred on a “Jarret’s Room” sketch as Yaorg, an excitable Icelandic teenager visiting the U.S. for the first time:
YAORG: Nine-Eleven! Nine-Eleven! I love Nine-Eleven!
JARRET: No! He means Seven-Eleven!
Dang! You’re right. Betrayed by my own fingers.

I wholeheartedly agree with the brilliance of the post-9/11 Onion issue. I liked this article in the follow-up issue as well:

Oh, I saw that one the other day. Yep, kind of fun.
Also better in context with the movie.
From the Simpsons episode “Moonshine River,” where the family visits New York for the second time:
BART: Come on, Dad, you love New York!…now that your two least favorite buildings have been obliterated: Old Penn Station and Shea Stadium.
HOMER: Lousy outdated relics!
That was such a good movie. I laughed hard at that.
There’s an episode of Family Guy where the Griffins are on Family Feud. Stewie is giving his own answers. When the question is “what’s your favorite holiday”, he says 9/11.
There was an episode of the sitcom Corporate where the company they work for turns September 11 into a kitschy holiday called Remember Day (so they can sell red-white-and-blue decorations and roast geese). It was pretty dark, but quite funny. RIP Lance Reddick.
It’s a good joke, but just a repackaged “my grandfather died in the Holocaust. Fell off the guard tower.”
The funny part of the scene to me is not that joke. It’s the part where he awkwardly says, “911 was a terrible tragedy… And I just thought… it would be funny to joke about it…”
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the film but IIRC that’s his ex girlfriend’s parents who thought it would be appropriate to grill the Pakistani guy about his feelings on 9/11. Which is also funny because he’s just so dumbfounded by the question he’s not even taking offense.
The movie was based on a true story that actually happened to Nanjiani and his wife who co-wrote the movie. I wonder if that conversation really happened.
Better Off Ted did not go there, but I’m sure eventually Verdian Technologies would have been shown to be doing this.
I mean, that’s not even fiction any more. It’s a recognized holiday. It’s called Patriots Day, not Remember Day, but that’s the only difference.
