9/13/03 SF Bay Area Dopefest(s) (A twofer!)

We are hastily tossing together a BADfest for this Saturday (the 13th) and taking suggestions for another get together on the 27th because some non-loser people actually have stuff to do this weekend!

You can follow our “thought” process here: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=209351&perpage=50&pagenumber=1
But what we came up with was meeting at Zenster’s suggested dim sum place around 11 or so (for those that like dim sum and want an early day) then continuing up the street to Max’s Diner around 5 o’clock for those of us with AM plans or who have less refined tastes.

Obviously anyone who wishes to make a day of it and come to both will be welcome! I guess we should get a general headcount of each place in case we have big enough groups that we need to make reservations?

Re: Public transit…not sure of bussing but I’m guessing the easiest BART stop is Powell, exiting at 4th and Market. Correct me if there’s one closer!

Suggestions for the 27th start now! I liked Troy McClure’s suggestion of Pompeii’s Grotto in Fisherman’s Wharf. http://www.mcn.org/a/pompei/ If it’s the place I’m thinking of, I went on one of my first dates with my now-husband there!

I believe that the morning plans are in limbo between the 13th and the 27th.

I just remembered I also have plans during the day this Saturday. So I may be coming by wherever you guys decide on sometime in the late afternoon/early evening. My offer of a ride still stands for anyone amenable to this uncertainty; I’ll be coming from Berkeley.

11 is way too early. I might be around for the 5 o’clock one. The Max’s is the American Graffiti place by the Metreon, right?

Tars, are you thinking of Mel’s?

I can do either morning or afternoon or both. Are people interested in dim sum at noon on the 13th, or do we just want to try for Max’s?

Double loser here–can’t make either date.

Ah well. One Day.

(maybe)

Have Fun!

oops! I guess i don’t know where Max’s is, then. (even the map won’t help me, as i get lost in my own home)

Still a definate maybe for tomorrow night.

Use MONTGOMERY BART–south down New Montgomery 3 blocks, short jog right/left around the academy of art college to Hawthorne, its one block south on Hawthorne.

Mel’s is one block west of the Canton House.

It’s like two blocks south of the MOMA, which is across Yerba Buena Gardens from the Metreon, so they’re in somewhat the same area. (I could almost swear you were there the last time! In fact I think you sat right across from me.) If anyone’s interested we can have a group meet at a better landmark and walk there together? It’s pretty straight forward though. Pretty much take Market to 3rd and walk south a few blocks. (If you’re parking near the Metreon take Mission or Howard to 3rd and walk south.) If you end up at Pacific Bell Park, you’re WAY too far south, haha.

Doesn’t seem to be a big group so far, so I’m leaning towards not making a reservation, but I’ll keep my eye here all the same.

I’m fairly sure you’ve been there Tars.

I’m in for dim sum at noon tomorrow. I’ll then head home and try to make it to the second meeting at Max’s for dinner.

N

I’m still planning on hitting Max’s around 5.

Cool, I just found out I’d be definately out this weekend as I have victim…I mean customers coming in tommorrow weekend. I’ll try to clear my calendar for the 27th.

voguevixen My wife and I went on one our first dates there too! The second as I recall, how weird. I’ll add my nod to that one. I love taking the ferry to Peer 39.

OK, I’m still planning on being at Max’s at 5. I’m wearing khaki skorts, a white knit vest-like top and judging from the weather report I’ll be carrying a light sagey green jacket. I have glasses and straight brown hair and look like Marcie from Peanuts.

As soon as a few people show up we’ll grab a table and designate it as the “Cecil Adams” party. Ask for that if you can’t pick us out.

Enjoy the dim sum everyone! I’m off to watch a baby smear cake in its hair.

Oh, it turns out we can’t make it after all to this one. Hopefully we can catch you all on the 27th or next time.

Good to see everyone again! Next time I’m grousing about the bill will someone please reach across the table and slap me into realising that since my share was 3 times everyone elses, my share of the tax and tip will also be three times bigger? I don’t know why I wasn’t able to grasp that until I was lying in bed 6 hours later!

I think we’re still gunning for another on the 27th, and everyone at the Max’s meet expressed interest in Pompei’s Grotto. Does anyone have preferences for time? Troy McClure jump in if you get a chance and let us know what would be easiest to set up. (I lean towards the evenings myself, but as far as I know I don’t have any conflicting appointments during the day on the 27th.)

I had a great time at both fests. Thanks menudo for getting us all together. I’m in for the 27th and look forward to meeting more Dopefest newbies.

Heh, voguevixen, I hadn’t seen what you wrote earlier about looking like Marcie from Peanuts, but I think it fits. So who does that make me? I thank my look is closer to Lucy, but my personality is more Peppermint Patty.

Marcie … Peppermint Patty? We almost had a Snooooopy too. What was this, Sparky’s memorial get together? Well, well, I had a fine time but it seems vv’s cosmopolitan inclinations may have caught up with her.
