Sunday morning I woke to the news of a nine year old girl being caught in the cross fire of a drive by shooting across the street from my house.
You can see it from the back windows of my house!
From what I can piece together the family was having a wedding reception/BBQ and then there was a drive by killing the little girl.
She wasn’t even from our area. She was a visiting cousin of theirs from Wisconsin.
On a personal note my children were outside playing at the time! Holy fuckin’ cow! Shit like this doesn’t happen around here!
What the fuck is wrong with these people?!
I haven’t heard too many details and maybe BeagleDave will be along to help me out here. I haven’t been reading the newspaper or watching the news much lately with all that has been happening to children lately.
I just want to sit in a corner and sob!
There is something really wrong with some segments of the population. Imagine caring so little about human life that you’re willing to risk killing innocent people to “get even” with someone.
A sad and horrifying tragedy, Kricket, all the more sad and horrifying because it happened in Iowa. Stuff like that isn’t supposed to happen out here; in Des Moines, maybe once in a great while, but in Davenport, no way.
If living in the 21st Century means having to live with murderous Yahoos, armed to the teeth and intent on mayhem I want nothing to do with it. I appreciate that I can’t dwell on a safer and mostly imaginary time and place, but I don’t see why any one should have to put up with this sort of insanity, no matter what any number of the misinformed and firearms obsessed my thing about the benefits of an armed citizenry. I say to hell with them, to hell with their proclivity to violence and to hell with the petty vendettas that generate these horrors. Some days you just want to crawl into a hole.
Glad to hear you weren’t involved. But now it’s time to do something. I know from experience this will go from bad to worse. Where I live used to be a nice quite area, unincorporated and unassuming. About 10 years ago there started to be incidents like the one near you that got rapidly worse. The sheriffs department organized a special task force to clean up the yahoos that were perpetrating the incidents. You need to get your community rallying around and don’t wait for this to spread and get worse. Good luck

I have a daughter who just celebrated her first birthday. I’ve seen too many stories about bad things happening to little girls, lately. I don’t think I could handle further participation in this thread.
Not to diminish the tragedy here, but since we’re about fightin’ ignorance and all that, I’m compelled to point out this statement is false. The occurrence of bystanders being shot, let alone “taken down” (by which I assume you mean “killed”) in drive-bys is actually quite rare.
Supposed to happen in Des Moines? Supposed to happen? It ain’t supposed to happen anywhere.

First all I know Dave said he wouldn’t be back in here but I would like to thank him since I am link inmpaired and I depend on him for that far too much. Especially with something like this.
Secondly, why do they print crap like that?
When my friend and her sister were killed in a car accident they printed a bunch of stuff about how their school stuff and the contents of their purses were strewn across the highway but yet you cannot see the girls in the pictures because they are under the tires of the semi.

Beerfan, funny story here…We tried to start a neighborhood watch type group around here before they busted the crack house in our area but we couldn’t get enough people involved. You have to have a set number.
Well, we went to the neighbors and asked them to get invovled. We went to the new Minister or whatever he is that just moved his family in across the street. You know thinking he would want to get involved and get to know his neighbors and do something nice.
Nope. Didn’t want to get involved in “other peoples” troubles.
Isn’t that his job?!

Rilchiam, as far as I know she was the only one killed or injured. But I have a feeling there are going to be more.
