_vti_cnf in MS InterDev

Is there a reason why InterDev creates _vti_cnf folders with a duplicate of its parent’s contents in each folder? Well, I am sure there has to be a reason, but does anyone know?

If you work in Master Mode and have a working area it means you will have four instances of each item…

It’s for “server extensions” i believe. When I set up a site on my server to work with FrontPage server extensions, it does this too. I believe it has to do with Source Control and maybe versioning. I know when we set up a site to work with Visual Studio .Net it did this too, and I think the reason is so we could work with projects right from the Web, eliminating FTP.

As far as I know, you don’t need these folders on the Web site (i’ve always deleted them when not working with Visual Studio) if you don’t plan on using InterDev to upload directly to or work from the Web.

[rant]I hate these folders, it makes it a bitch to upload and download entire site directories.[/rant]
