If indeed the automobile of state was careening towards a cliff, a military coup would be preferable to a civil war. The tumult would be avoided, and nobody would be fooled by the veneer of democracy any longer. I don’t think the state is headed for a cliff as you say, it’s more likely grinding to a halt, which is my preferred status.
