A 17 day vacation? Are you shitting me?

Perhaps, but considering how Trump complained about Obama’s vacations, how many he’s taken already, how much attention he devotes to rallies and tweeting even when he’s in the White House, and that he campaigned on the idea of overturning established political norms, to say that he doesn’t follow the work habits of previous presidents isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

No, I’m saying it highlights a peculiarly American problem, that American workers get very little paid time off - and many get none, zip, nada. I’m saying the problem isn’t that Trump can take a 17-day vacation, but most Americans can’t.

In most other advanced democracies, three, four, five weeks’ paid vacation is a given, even if you’re a street sweeper. This isn’t a benefit that’s exclusively the province of the rich and privileged in most nations we think of as being almost on a par with us. It’s appalling that the U.S. alone of advanced democracies guarantees zero weeks of paid vacation.

Putting it in list form, most Americans:
[ul]
[li]Don’t make $400K/year[/li][li]Don’t get free housing, food, and transportation[/li][li]Don’t get Secret Service protection[/li][li]Don’t have streets cleared for them when they travel by car[/li][li]Aren’t able to take a 17-day vacation[/li][/ul]
One of these things is very different from the others.

Not to defend tRump, but POTUS pays for his & his families’ food.

Doesn’t he pay for that out of an allowance?

He will loudly boast about how he’s returning his salary, but even he knows he’s making out bigly on the perks.

Back before the election, if he wanted to visit Mar-A-Lago or one of his golf courses, he had to foot the bill for his private jet. Now we pay for that. Not to mention all the other expenses that fell on him that now are paid for by us.

Add to that the money Trump Organization is raking in due to his presidency. He could pay back twice the $400k salary and still be far ahead.

You bet. In fact, from his Twitter feed this morning:

So there. He’s working hard! And he’s got meetings! Case closed.

IS he returning his salary, or is this another of his unkept promises, like his charity donations?

Nope.

So far, he’s sticking to it. Probably looking for ways to get out of it.

He’s on a streak!

I’m not quite so sure he is “sticking to it”. If he just refused the salary could he claim it as a charitable donation the same way he can if he accepts the salary then donates it?

It’s not even that. It’s part of the strongman act: “I will cut your funding and autonomy, but generously gift you with money when I want to”. It’s like the Afghani girls’ robotics team “I’ll ban you from the country, then generously make an exception”. This is how dictators do things: all the good stuff comes from whims and personal indulgence. Trump’s not a dictator, but he’d like to be. Or thinks he is. Or something.

I’ve noticed the last two days that news programs are calling this a “working vacation”. Must be . . . FAKE NEWS!

That’s to remind him he has things to do besides golf. And tweeting.

Isn’t it a good thing when The Donald takes vacation from doing bad things to the country?

Isn’t it a bad thing when he can do the same bad things while hidden away at his own private club where nobody knows who he is making deals with?

QFT.

It looks like Hillary and I believe that assholes like yourself and the OP can do better. Keep proving us wrong.

It looks like you (a self-identified SDMB libtard) are still too stupid to write my nom de plume correctly.

Others have capitalized my username. Doesn’t bother me a bit. Rather petty to get all upset over such a insignificant thing.

You seem fond of showing off your extensive knowledge of foreign languages.
