Or like Johnny Unitas ending his career as a Charger.
To get back to the thread here, New York is one step closer to the possibility of a Subway Series. I say, “Hell with that!”
Go Cards. Go M’s.

[One last football hijack, then I’m through]
Dry: You don’t remember Tommy Prothro? For all intents and purposes neither do I, except for one play he ran – the craziest football formation I ever saw. The game was televised (Monday night, IIRC) so I actually saw it happen.
(I’m making up the details here, but I know I’m not too far from the truth…) He split the front offensive line into two (maybe three) groups. He had something like two guys a little to the left, and three guys a little to the right, and about six feet of space between the two groups. One of the groups may even have been back from the line of scrimmage by a couple of feet.
He only ran the play once, and IIRC, it resulted in zero gain. It was such a wacky play I remember seeing it diagramed in the next day’s sport’s section.
All I can say is: WTF?
Okay baseball Dopers: Play ball!
Damn.
Damn damn damn.
Damn damn damn dammity damn damn.
::sigh::
And tonight we have to face Al Leiter. We were able to pull it out vs Glavine, maybe we can do it again. The Cards might’ve needed a little wake up call after sweeping the Braves that they still need to win 4 more games, hopefully last night will spur them on.
As I watch the playoffs, a song keeps running through my head:
“Autumn in New York
Why does it seem so exciting . . .”
Good luck, Cards.
Leiter’s last start against the Giants was positively brilliant. IF he is able to pitch that effectively again tonight, hitting his spots, jamming the hell out of the right handed batters, etc, etc… then the Mets head home 2-0.
In Mets franchise history, every time they have played a potentially clinching game in the post-season AT HOME, they have won that game.
Yeah, I know, Leiter’s a threat. IMO, more of a threat than Hampton is. And if the Cardinal offense was as quiet as it was last night, it sure looks like the Redbirds are going to have to combat a 2 game deficit on the road. At Shea. It’s not looking good for the Cards so far.
Damn McGwire’s bad knee!
Damn Fernando Tatis’s . . . um, well, I don’t know what’s wrong with him (nothing physically), but dammit all the same!
::sigh::
Oh well, the Rams are 5-0!
Actually, R-Dog, that isn’t quite true, they lost a game in the '73 divisional series, but won the next one to end it. Still, given the weakness of the Cards against lefties, and Leiter’s tremendous success vs. lefties (Drew, Edmonds, Clark) the best bet the Crads have is to give up no more than 1 and hope they can get to the bullpens. Lose this, the series is probably over.
Tonight, of course, the Cards put up a fight but the Mets pulled it out. Dammit.
Sexy Jeter-butt be damned… the Yanks beat my A’s… I’m rootin’ for Seattle now!!!
…and should the Yankees survive, I’m rootini’ for the other team, whichever one it may be.
Dammit. That’s the last time I trust Chris Berman. He told me that last year about this time, right before the Mets beat the D-Backs.
Anyway, what a great game last night. I mean, unless you were rooting for the Cards.
Still, it was fantastic! Tied at 3 going into the 8th. Tied at 5 going into the 9th. The tying run reaches in the bottom of the ninth. A game ending K. Baseball drama! Love it!
Let’s not count St. Louis out yet (as much as we want to - heh). Coming back after losing the first two isn’t impossible. 96 Yanks?
