I have a Kindle Fire. The con is that it is very slow. I read e books on my iPad via the Kindle app. Much faster regarding downloads and opening books. If you want a dedicated e reader, look into the Kindle Paperwhite. Do you plan on borrowing e books from your library? If so, you’ll need the Hoopla app which I don’t believe is available via the Paperwhite. My suggestion is get an iPad. Everything is in one place then.
Hi Nava
I don’t know the answer to your question, but I do know this improbable story.
The last Finnair flight 666 to Hel was on a Friday the 13th. (They still fly, apparently, but they recoded the flight from AY666 to AY954.)

'nks for all the good wishes
Swampy, it’s a job sort of involving plants of all sizes, and basically being a college plant department minion.
It was interesting, ver’ tiring, and they seem like nice people to work with. It’s all more than a little chaotic though, partly because the college got a not-very-good OFSTED inspection right at the end of last year. This means basically a huge shakeup of everything has to take place, though the department I’m working with, and the site as a whole (there’s 8 sites I think), actually came out pretty well in the report. Thus everyone’s kinda panicking because stuff’s getting changed around and they all know more attention than normal is being paid to everything.
I’m actually gonna be going back in tomorrow, though originally I was supposed to be in Thursday, because the lady who used to do the job can come in then to do a handover, then I have a training day on another site on Wednesday. Luckily ‘winging it’ is pretty much my preferred lifestyle…
I have a kindle paperwhite. I have to admit, since I got it, I barely read most of my paper books. The light is handy, but it’s dim enough that it’s not uncomfortable even reading in the dark, and the battery lasts me at least a week of reading an hour or so a day. I’ve not tried borrowing library books, as I’ve been almost entirely reading free classic books, from da Jungle and elsewhere; I think I’ve only paid for 2 books so far.
It does have the slightly annoying thing that it sometimes seems to be actually impossible to fully remove books you downloaded then realised were a waste of time. I have a few really annoying ones that are inexplicably undeletable.
I have a kindle, but have not used it since (1) I don’t have wireless to download with and (2) I like have paper books in my hand. Call me old-fashioned (cause I am in this case).
Lunch has been appropriately disposed of and I have done a small amount of cleaning. Soccer practice in about 3 hours, so need to rest for that.
Peaches, good news about the new puppy. Hope the great group o’pets bring you much happiness.
boo fae, hope you enjoyed Denver and the Rockies.
There are programs for Windows, iWhatever and Android that read any format. Amazon themselves have versions you can download and they also offer the service of reading the books you bought from them through their own website.
I do love my Kindle but I use it mostly when I’m taking a lot of flights, trains or subways. It lets me take a whole library in an object the size and of one pocket book, with a battery that lasts a lot longer and a screen that’s much more readable than that of a phone. It’s the second one: the previous one died after more than five years of heavy use. It was out of warranty, but Amazon still asked for it back when I ordered the new one. Mine is a paperwhite.
Some of those can be deleted while treating it as an external hard drive of your computer. Others (such as what seems to be twenty five editions of the manual) just like to come back.
…the size and weight of…
Dunnow where had the weight gone off to.
Happy Moonday!
I survived 6 hours of driving through, over, and around the mountains.
It is tiring though, and I’m sure all those cars behind me were telling me to take my slow poke ass back to Maryland.
I made a wrong turn on the way home, was (I thought) hopelessly lost, no phone service, no internet to google directions.
Onstar gave me free directions, very nice of them
It turns out I was going the right way, but it made me feel better to know that.
The reunion was small, probably about 200 people, of whom I knew about 30.
I love West Virginia, I really wish I had moved there.
My son said Ripple was bad. I took him to the park before I had to leave, and a number of his friends came early to see him. He still went wild when I left, he wouldn’t settle down and drove my son crazy. As soon as I got home he rushed to greet me, then went to his bed and crashed.
He may have sensed something was up, he didn’t play yesterday, clung to me the whole time.
He got a good three hour romp at the park today, and he seemed a lot happier and playful.
My neighbor cooked dinner for me tonight, strip steak, baked beans, mac and cheese.
I still need to order groceries to pick up tomorrow.
Or maybe not. Toosday is senior citizens day, so I get a discount on a number of items, but it could wait a few more days.
My son wants to go to lunch Wednesday.
Saturday morning one city pool is open for dogs, and next Moonday evening the other city pool is open for dogs. I hope Ripple likes it.
I think I have to go to the doctor this month, so I’d better be scheduling a bunch of tests. Joy and happiness there.
Good luck with the job Nut.
I hope I remember to hit send this time, I typed out a bunch of stuff earlier and forgot to hit send.
Ahhhhh….that Perkins. And those are pretty much latkes.
Potato pancake - Wikipedia I like them both ways, but prefer applesauce.
baker, I have the Kindle app on my tablet. Most of my new book purchases are on it (ever try to move a book collection from a walk up apartment? ). It’s much easier to read off a 10" tablet than a phone.
Well, I haven’t gotten out of my jammies today.
First time I’ve done that when I wasn’t sick in a few years.
I set up the story and craft for the heathen children next weekend, finished a scrapbook layout and made chicken tiki masala and Indian fried cabbage for supper. I’ll play around in the studio this evening.
Worked. Got yelled at because some people can’t be assed to read the PHARMACY CLOSED ON LABOR DAY sign that has been on the front doors(in and out) and the pharmacy registers fro the last month. Having a Manhattan, since it’s my Firday.
When the critters complain about me going to work, I remind them I wouldn’t have to, if they would bark/meow out some winning Powerball numbers.![]()
See above.
The Finns sure sent a lot of Soviets there during WWII. (We like our Finnish snipers in North Carolina, too.![]()
I have an origial Kindle(it comes with buttons!).
Pros: I have over a hundred books in a lightweight package
Cons: You do occasionally have to charge you book.
I just use the Kindle app on an existing device such as phone or tablet. To me, no point in carrying around one more object.
I was definitely having a “cannot brain” day today. Goofed my drive to irk and wound up at the prior location (thanks to Google Maps, only lost 5-10min recovering). Sup was surprised to see me, since I’d apparently been scheduled off and no one had told me (I stuck it out, needed the $$$). Few callers today, but one utter ass to foul up my mood. Locked myself out of the same crucial system 3 times today (help desk assured me this was NOT the record).
For irritation points, got home to find some jackass squatting in MY reserved parking space.
I grilled steak and corn on the cob for dinner tonight. We each ate half of our steaks. I ate all of my corn. (I freakin’ love corn on the cob – carbohydrates be damned!) I had two glasses (⅔ bottle) of 14 Hands Hot To Trot.
Adventure today. My laundry machines have punked out on me to a degree where we were drowning in dirty clothes, so I visited the Washateria for the first time in probably 15 years. (If we’re going to die in a hurricane, we’ll be wearing clean underoos, dammit.)
Holy crap at the prices! Drying was relatively cheap ($1.25-$2.00 per load, depending on the size of the machine,) but washing  ! $3.50 for the tiny washer - $11.50 for the giant one with an extra rinse! And worse: no option to pay electronically, and only the big washers and dryers took dollar coins even! I think I have carpal tunnel syndrome from feeding quarters into appliances.
But I think I’ve done all of the away-from-home chores ahead of tropical weather. Made groceries, bought gas, oil, carb cleaner, and a spare spark plug for the generator. Got some cash out of the bank. I’ll make Tony haul off trash in the morning, but that’s on him. I’m done with the general public for a day or two.
I’m pooped, and already borrowing some tired from tomorrow, because I still need to clean up the yard, secure the porches, and drag out the generator for a test drive tomorrow.
I may have opened one of my emergency drinking beers when I was putting away groceries. For quality control purposes.
I have two Kindles, one of the original ones with buttons and a Kindle Fire Wifey bought me, but I can’t really add much to the conversation. They’re handy for going away for a few days instead of carrying books, but I much prefer a paper book normally, plus it seems like I’m constantly ‘turning the page’ on the Kindle much more than a paper book.
We put the ‘boys’ in puppy jail for 3 days last week 'cause the roofers were driving Gibbs crazy. Now they have kennel cough. The GirlChild[sup]tm[/sup] had some doggie medicine that she brought over today though, so hopefully they’ll be feeling better soon.
I likes potato pancakes but never heard of Perkins. I doubt they could hold a candle to either of my gramma’s potato pancakes though.
Tri Tip and sauteed zucchini rounds tonight. And also cole slaw. Which is about ready.
Later.
You lost weight & are complaining about it? ![]()
Is that like a whole handful of tequila?
I went too, because all the bedding got washed, including the mattress pad, which can, maybe, barely, fit into my washer all by itself. $6 per load in the big, industrial machines & it only takes quarters. At least drying was relatively quick at 25¢/5 mins. Heavens opened up (again) while I was there so I was stuck inside; couldn’t even go for a walk.
Reader’s Digest version
Kings Island was fun and seeing some old friends even more so.
Got home safe today and went to work.
My transfer may go through and I will switch start times from 6pm to 6am at the new place.
All in all I am quite excited and happy. Now just to catch up around here.
My Aunt Ronnie made amazing potato pancakes - fried in lard, of course! I wish I’d gotten her recipe. My mom has a close approximation and I’m pretty sure she gave it to me - I’ll look. The main difference is that the potatoes need to be grated, so I can’t use the hash browns like in the Perkins recipe. Maybe when I re-retire I’ll take the time.
Daughter and SIL are taking a photography class together on Tuesdays, starting tonight. So I’ll have Roxy from the time I pick her up at the sitter’s till bedtime. I expect she’ll wear me out!
A couple of weeks ago, I set up my VISA account to text me for any charges over $50, since the last time our card was compromised, someone tried to charge over $700 at WalMart. Last night, a bit after midnight, Atlantic Broadband ran their charges for the month, so we were awakened to be informed that our cable bill had been paid. I guess I should turn off the notification at night.
Meanwhile, Baby Engineer left me a metric butt-ton of drawings to fix before Thursday. Gonna be a busy day.
Happy Tuesday!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 93 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. The big items on today’s agenda are cave spiffin’ and laundry. Da cave is actually in pretty good shape so that shouldn’t be too bad. Sup shall be grilled poke chops, peas ‘n carrots, cheesey broccoli and rice from a box (don’t judge!), and rolls. I have no desire or need to leave da cave today so I won’t. Also need to organize a crew to deal with movin’ stone pavers hopefully on Firday.
{{{Peaches}}} ::tacklehug:: welcome back! Y’all stay safe from Dorian! I imagine there will be a buncha traffic on I-16 today. Good for you for layin’ in supplies already. Are French toast makin’s de rigueur for hurricanes?
Everyone else, I read all but retained little, so yays, boos, hugs, noogies, trouts, chitlins and how you doin’s all around as needed.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day. Rah.
Happy Tuesday Y’all!
Morning all. Cleaning house remains the major task at hand (I even made a list!), we’ll see what gets accomplished. Had a little snack to break fast, and soccer with the girls’ team is this afternoon. No rain again, may have to employ the sprinkler system on the lawn to get the rain back.
FCM, I usually check my accounts 2 times a week to see if there is any ‘bad’ charges; so far I’ve been lucky and the one instance of fraud my bank picked up on fast and closed the card (this was years ago). Have fun chasing the little one…
ruble, hope the time change in work doesn’t mess up you internal clock too much.
peaches, haven’t used the laundromat since my home remodel, but I know what you mean. They must reload the change machine 3 times a day…
Nettie, we all have days like that; hopefully you won’t have 3-4 days sneak up on you…
All y’all have a good 2Day.
Thunderboomers woke me this morning. I’m on staycation this week but since rain is expected all day, today will be an at home day.
I usually get up between 7 and 8 so its not that much of a swing and I’ll have three days to reset. It should be easier on the bod than the consecutive 8-hour deals running 8pm to 5am.
On other news storms hit while we were away and I have some water damage to attend to; most of which is already done.
