A couple of questions about 80s PENTHOUSE comix

  1. Who was the artist who did those somewhat adrogynous pen-and-ink headshots of women with asymmetrical hairstyles?

  2. What was the name of that cartoon feature that had that Vincent Price looking character getting into all kinds of adventures with gorgeous women? The artist, too, if you know it.

… and while I’m at it…

  1. What was the name of the redheaded cartoon hooker feature in HUSTLER? Not PLAYBOY’S LITTLE ANNIE FANNY.

I don’t know any answers to your questions, but did you know Justice League International creators Keith Giffen, Kevin Maguire, and Adam Hughes all did work for Penthouse Comix in the '90s, as well as Jason Pearson and other “mainstream” comics pros?

I don’t suppose the artist you’re thinking of is Patrick Nagel, best known for that Duran Duran album cover with the woman’s head drawing? His work is very representative to me of the earlier half of the '80s, and I know he’s done illustrations for Playboy Magazine.

That would be “Oh, Wicked Wanda” by Frederic Mullally (writer) and Ron Embleton (artist).

Link, very slightly not safe for work: Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Oh, Wicked Wanda!

Big Bad Voodoo Lou. Don’t sell yourself short; Patrick Nagel is exactly who I was thinking of. Now you’ve got me curious about the JLI crew’s adult fare.

Biffy the Elephant Shrew. Nailes it, too – although I may also be thinking of “Sweet Chastity.” But at least I have an artist and feature to track down.

One more…

Giffen was writing and drawing a comic adaptation of the Bible for Penthouse Comix, Maguire had a superheroine called Hericane, and Hughes, one of the reigning kings of cheesecake art, no doubt had some kind of curvy, busty babes as well.

For #3, wasn’t her name Honey? I absolutely can’t do anything to confirm that right now, so I’m going completely from memory.

OK, that’s Nagel. We got that one.

Sweet Chastity came to mind, but my first guess was Milo Manara’s Click!

Huh… that one I’m not familiar with, but I know George Trosley does a lot of comic work for them, including a once-in-a-while feature called something like “Thunder Bunz.” He also does a lot of car enthusiast work that I saw in old Volkswagen magazines I used to be into.

… and it can’t be Serpieri’s Druuna… she’s neither a hooker nor a red-head.

The “Vincent Price” character was Viktor Von Frankenstein, in the Sweet Chastity series. That strip and Wicked Wanda are (were) archived online, but the site is currently down. I’ll post a link once I can confirm it’s available.

Makes sense. “Honey” is their equivalent of “Playmate”.

Gaahhh! This is killing me. I’m pretty sure her name was Honey Hooker, but I can’t check from here in the salt mines.

Can someone please confirm?
