Fascinating story. Basically a plane goes down in the Libyan desert in 1n 1943 and was discovered about 15 years later. A couple of years later, in February 1960, the United States Army conducted a formal search of the area for the remains of the crew. Between that and later searches all but one of the crew were officially accounted for. The only crewman not to be found was the last gunner, Staff Sergeant Moore.
Quoth Wiki, “The body of S/Sgt Moore has never officially been found. However, his remains may have been recovered and buried by a desert patrol of the British Army in 1953. As they were unaware that any Allied air crews were missing in the area, the human remains were recorded but then buried without further investigation.”
Wouldn’t Moore have had identifying clothing and insignias? and wouldn’t the British army been versed enough in allied armies clothing and insignias to at least have a clue who they might have found?
Another question, the article states that among the various items found at the wreck site was “a thermos of tea [that] was found to be drinkable”. Really? I don’t know a lot about tea but I thought it went bad fairly quickly.
