I am reading that Supreme Court Justice David Souter, was attacked/mugged while jogging in DC. (no mention of bodyguards…you would think a SCJ would be protected as much as the President, no?)
Anyhow, I’m recalling a thread about actor Kevin Spacey claiming he was mugged at 4 AM in a known gay area of a park.
Do ya think we got us a gay Supreme? Juicy gossip to say the least.
Well, as long as he doesn’t get himself strangled in a gay porno theater by an assassin hired by a ruthless oil baron, I don’t see the problem!
(Note: this is the only comment I could really think of that would keep this relevant to Cafe Society… :D)
Yeah, I thought we were going to be treated to some juicy gossip about Florence Ballard or something.
Do parks in the UK have designated gay sections now? I’d never heard that before. Do they have pink grass? And Spacey admitted he wasn’t mugged. He said he tripped while chasing someone who’d conned him into lending out his cell phone.
This is possibly the silliest attempt to link two unrelated events I’ve ever seen. I’ll admit it’s a great new gay stereotype, though: gays all job late at night! :smack:
There’s been speculation about Souter since he was appointed. It was one of the things that concerned GB the elder about appointing Souter. I can still remember the Newsweek article about the appointment. The gay thing was mentioned in IIRC the first paragraph.
The Advocate last year kicked up a minor firestorm amongst its readers with a cover story speculating on whether Souter is gay and how his sexuality might affect his vote on Lawrence. Not sure if this is that story but it seems likely.
I have to protest: Souter may or may not be one of the millions of gay Americans- that’s his business- but I resent the allegation that he’s been beating up Kevin Spacey in parks. The important thing is that they’re two consenting adults and if things get a little out-of-hand then that’s their business. (That said I’m putting $2 on Souter if they ever go at it again.)
Gay or not, by all indications Souter’s a more effective and thoughtful Justice than another Bush41 appointee; Clarence Thomas.
No way, man! I know Kevin Spacey is an actor, but he’s still 20 years younger than Souter. And it’s not like Supreme Court Justices are known for being macho.
A John Coltrane composition gone horribly wrong…
It’s not like Souter was out in the middle of the night. News reports say the attack took place around 9 pm.
Whenever a gay, or suspected gay, man is attacked after sunset lately, there seems to be the not-so-subtle implication he was cruising and got thumped. Where did this come from. Aren’t gays allowed to be the victims of standard muggings like everyone else?
Was I the only one who thought this thread was about Alan Moore’s comic book character? (Just started reading Supreme: The Story of the Year.)
The AP account of Souter’s assault did not disclose the exact location of the assault, but that was for security reasons. The report said that Souter runs every night on a track at a military installation and was likely assaulted returning home from his run.
Judging by the standard hours that a Supreme Court justice keeps (which is probably not 9-5), I’m leaning toward the “got mugged” theory.
Sure we are. But there is I hope you’ll agree a difference between “man attacked in park” and “man who is the subject of long-standing speculation that he is gay attacked in a section of a park which is known to be a place where men go to have anonymous sex.”
Does Diana Ross and he rest of the band know?
Also the fact that he’s 65 and wealthy enough to employ upscale credit card processing male escort agencies if he is gay (which it isn’t proven that he is) would lend credence to the mugging. I may be naive, but I hardly think that a rich old man would risk major damage to his career and his health (through mugging or STD) by going after common street hustlers.
Kevin Spacey is gay?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
I have no idea if Souter is gay. On the other hand, I find it curious how quickly his personal life disappeared as an issue when he turned out to be a left winger.
When his nomination was first announced, every liberal group proclaimed “We’re going to Bork him,” and all were making much of the fact that he was a middle aged single man who lived on a farm with his mother. Obviously, he had to be a weirdo!
Once Souter proved to be a standard, garden variety liberal, of course, none of those groups seemed to find his lifestyle even the least bit odd!
Well… not to hijack this thread to Cuba, (although I’m not sure where it’s going anyway) but why would this be in any way surprising re the nature of practical politics? A conservative justice who was gay would (for many people) be supremely odd. A liberal justice who was gay wouldn’t even register a “meh” on the cultural Surprise 'o Meter.
