"A great beauty"

So, no love for Kathleen Turner, then? Ah well.

Kate certainly IS a great beauty. I’d also like to add:
Audrey Hepburn
Grace Kelly
Olivia DeHaviland
Vivien Leigh
Scarlett Johanssen
Liv Tyler
Natalie Wood

Assuming you’re not joking: Kathleen Turner was incredibly beautiful, e.g. in Body Heat. Unlike Isabella Rosselini, however, the years have been far from kind, as evidenced in The Virgin Suicides. See Teri Garr for another instance.

As to the OP: Yes, Kate Winslet is a 100% Great Beauty in my book, in the Audrey Hepburn/Myrna Loy tradition. It doesn’t hurt that she’s witty and interesting and grounded in interviews. Among current actresses, I’d also put Helena Bonham-Carter in that category, though I seem to recall some dissent on that point around the boards at one time or another.

I’m kind of on the fence about Winslet. I think she’s incredibly sexy, but not always beautiful.

I agree with Michelle Pfeiffer. Her turn in The Fabulous Baker Boys cemented her place, IMHO, and she’s aged very well.

How about Bo Derek? She’s not as well-respected as an actress as most of the other suggestions in this thread, but she certainly is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever laid eyes on.

For a younger candidate, my vote goes to Natalie Portman. She seems to have the depth of character and talent that really enhances her physical beauty.

Others I might pick:
Kate Beckinsale
Winona Ryder
Natasha Henstridge (quite stunning, IMO)
Keira Knightley
Diane Lane

Oh, you poor, poor deluded fools. Most of the women mentioned so far fall into ‘girl next door’ category. Cute? Pretty? Yeah, sure. But hardly beautiful.

Other than my wife*, the obvious answer to the question of who is the greatest beauty of all time is, of course, Dolly Chahine.

Click on ‘Moumou Einy’ and then click play selected. Should be work safe. Try not to fall out of your chair when you see her in her pink dress. This lady has it all and then some. Kind of a combination of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sophia Loren on the best days of their lives.

Unfortunately, whoever does her makeup most of the time seems to want to apply it with a putty knife and hide her natural beauty. Luckily, in this video it shows through.

*better safe than sorry!

That link crashed my browser (Safari in OSX) twice.

Most of the women being named come up less in the “Great Beauty” column and more in the “Girl Next Door” column, for me. I mean, they’re pretty enough, but they’re not launching any ships in my book.

Strange. Works fine through Firefox. I just tested it again with no problems.

We should have rated them all usining the Millihelen scale.

You have quoted the Great One. I cannot slay a devotee of the Professor without a really good reason. I shall leave my monkeys at home and bring ale.

'Course it’ll be awfully early in the morning for boozing.

When I saw the thread title, the first I thought of was Paulette Goddard.

The second was Shania Twain.

After watching **V For Vendetta ** last night, I must agree with this one. How often do you see a woman who can retain 95% of her hotness after being put in a grungy prison jumpsuit and having her head shaved? Many otherwise attractive actresses would look positively scary in that condition (imagine a bald Nicole Kidman . . . brrr!), but Portman was still stunning.

I find Monica Bellucci to be absolutely stunning. She’s definitely someone I’d consider a great beauty. It’s a combination of the eyes, bone structure, and the way she carries herself - very comfortable in her own body.
