A Lake Effect MMP

I saw that in the Troonto Star and thought of you.

Surely they’ll craft a replacement? Isn’t there a wooden temple somewhere that has stood on its site for 600 years; they just replace it every now and then?

Great OP, Rapunzel. I like reading about where people live.

I’m back at work today. First thing I did was buy 5 more vacation days. Since I had to borrow 5 days of vacation while I was out, I thought I should go ahead and buy them, so I won’t be short for my vacation in June. I’m not sure I would have caught up by then otherwise. Was that mundane and pointless enough?

Work is going well so far. I’m not sure how I’ll be feeling this afternoon. I really overdid it yesterday. It was far more exhausting emotionally than physically. As much as I *want * to give up hoarding, it’s still difficult to actually do. I think I’m down to a more reasonable amount of stuff, even if I still have too much of it. I need to get rid of clothes, yarn, and books, all things I’m still loath to give up.

rigs, I’m giving Nora Roberts a try, mostly because she was so awesome during the Cassie Edwards kerfuffle. (Big, huge, enormous plagiarism scandal involving black-footed ferrets, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and lots and lots of cut’n’paste of scholarly works into Native American bodice rippers. I can’t link from work, but can later tonight if anybody’s interested.) However, I only got one paragraph into the book, and I was already  on the purple prose. Perhaps I’ll just continue to admire La Nora as a person.

ETA 1: I need a couple of drinks before I spill the beans…

ETA 2: I blush…

Happy Monday, all, such as it is!

I’ve never been to anywhere in New York apart from going to the World’s Fair in 1964, then shopping at Macy’s in '65. But now I really wanna see upstate and the western part. I’ll just add it to the list of places to see before I die. All because of the OP.

Today was a pain in the butt at work, but I finally got my problem project uploaded and thru Tech QA. So with luck, it’ll be posted tomorrow. Whew! I also had to get two of the programming geeks to come see the problems I was having, and I learned a few things - like you can’t use < or > in layer names if you’re going to upload your map. So yay!

Good job, Bbbobbio!!

Stay warm, everybody!!

Poke chops for supper - not sure what sides, but I’ll forage in the fridge after I feed the critters. Other than that, just another day in paradise.

My parents have friends who live in Lewiston (near Niagara Falls) so we used to go visit them pretty regularly. The falls themselves are certainly spectacular, but the surrounding area is such a tourist trap that it just sucks. Well, the butterfly place is pretty cool. But otherwise, too touristy.

I’m going to make a pitch for the rest of upstate. There’s Cooperstown with the baseball hall of fame and James Fenimore Cooper’s home and the Farmer’s Museum. There’s Saratoga, which is chock-a-block with history (e.g. Revolutionary War battlefield, a beautiful old downtown, the bottling plant etc.) plus has the oldest thoroughbred track in the country. There’s Ithaca, which is in the Fingerlakes region and is just beautiful (or as their bumper stickers put it, “Ithaca is gorges.”). There’s Lake George which is on the doorstep of the Adirondak Mountains and is a great place to visit (in the off-season, otherwise it’s jam packed with tourists too). Of course there’s Albany, the capital, with all of the government buildings and the Hudson River and one of my favorite museums - the Albany Institute. And there’s tons of stuff in between. NY’s got it all - the City, mountains, lakes, farm country, beaches on Long Island, two Great Lakes, the sources of the Hudson, Deleware, and Susquehanna Rivers, and so much more. Definitely worth a look as a vacation spot. (However, taxes being what they are, it’s not a great place to live, says the former-NYer-turned-Minnesotan!) But if anyone decides to plan a trip, let those of us who are from the area know, and we can give you lots of recommendations!

I always make a point to say I’m from UPSTATE NY. With much emphasis on UPSTATE.

We make some pretty good wine here… red or white?

(**Sean **has trashed our beer, so I won’t offer that! )

You know that will only encourage me, don’t you?

**Haze **-- the one time I was in Korea, I know for certain I was shown one of the gates, and I think it may have been the one that burned down (I think I was shown the Northern gate? Does that make sense?) It’s terrible when ancient treasures like that are destroyed just for the sake of destruction…

**Cutie **-- haven’t heard from you since morning… you OK, girl?

11 PM here… I’ll probably surf a bit more, then I’m going to sleep – night, all!

I just heard that there are still brush fires active over here. Rt 17 is supposedly closed to all traffic. Probably that part of the road going south from my house into what VBob calls Betsytown.

I just got this as one of the google ads. My father’s family used to have a cabin there way back when. It was sold when I was just a little tyke, but that is another good place to visit.

No1 - there’s a Northern gate?

Okay, I just looked it up, and whaddya know, there is one. Hah. For some reason it’s not as famous though. Back in the day when the gates actually functioned as gates, it was the least used of the four because it was surrounded by harsh terrain - most people entered the city from the east and the south.

I had a talk with Incompetent College and it turns out they don’t know anything about visas . . . so things are a bit up in the air. Hopefully once they receive the correct information they can be persuaded.

I’m back. Too much reading to catch up. It’s dinner in TVLand, we’re having sausage patties and french fries and drumsticks for dessert.

BTW, Thanks, McUne.

Your welcome Pie.

Haze I read that online as well. That is so sad. :frowning:

VBob, thanks for all you do. It sounds as if you had some weekend! Yikes! Glad to hear that you all are ok.

Oh, the excitement! I just got a phone call from RoboMike Huckabee. Oh, yes, just what I want to do is listen to a recorded message. No, wait, I don’t. So I hung up. Take that, Huck!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Supper was good - veggies were italian green beans and succotash. Why is it called succotash? Why isn’t it called corn-n-limas? Like peas-n-carrots? Then again, Sylvester wouldn’t say thufferin’ corn-n-limas, would he?? That would just be silly.

And I won’t stand for silly. Or I might. You just never know…

Alright I couldn’t resist a word etymology question-

succotash comes from misickqatash- meaning ear of corn- Algonquian indians.

Or so the Google Gods tell me.

We’re having Parmesan/garlic/lemon/onion pork roast and noodles. Ok, so I should make potatoes, but I forgot to buy them, so it’s noodles.

I’m not a big romance reader–plots too predictable and I find all the prose too purple (pulsating velvet encased man shaft, anyone?). But I like Crusie, because her characters seem real. They are very fluff reads, but I like mind candy. I just like murder mystery mind candy better.
It’s snowing here. I have to go out (again) tonight–ugh.

And where do the lima beans come from? Did the Algonquin indians grow a hybrid corn/lima bean plant?

Not that I care all that much…

The one romance novelist I love is Diana Gabaldon. Jamie is my hero.

Errrr… no… thanks… perhaps another time?

Aw, shucks! :o
What?

Uh, nothing to see here, look away…

Yeah, so I opened up the reply window here and went blank.

Carry on.

CutiePie, you never told me you were a handsome ginger Scotsman!

I hate the fact that shop windows already have spring clothing in their windows. It’s 10 below zero, people!! Just looking at the mannequins in their cotton dresses and sandals makes me feel cold. Brrr.
